I am honored to participate in the Global Surgery Advocacy Certificate (GSAC) program as a general surgeon from South Sudan. I have greatly benefited from the in-person sessions held at the University of Global Health Equity (Butaro campus). I am particularly grateful to our facilitators, Operation Smile, and the Nkafu Policy Institute.
In South Sudan, we face significant challenges within our healthcare system. The government does not provide universal health coverage for its citizens, and our healthcare budget has not met the expectations set in the 2001 Abuja Declaration. The global surgery sessions have inspired me to seek solutions that will enhance timely access to quality surgical and obstetric care, most importantly, health equity for all.
During the sessions, I learned “Knowing my Why,” how to develop an advocacy strategy, map stakeholders, secure funding for advocacy projects, utilize storytelling for advocacy, develop a pitch, understand human rights in global surgery, leverage social media for advocacy, and engage in health diplomacy. We also participated in practical exercises, including pitch development and health diplomacy, and even created a podcast as part of our training.
At the end of the sessions, one of my colleagues from Burkina Faso confidently stated, "I am the face of Global Surgery." Indeed, this GSAC in-person training empowered us to become advocates for Global Surgery. I am Dr. Langa James, a Global Surgery advocate from South Sudan, and I am dedicated to improving surgical care in my country.
