Topical Minoxidil can be amazing and it is a common treatment option for many of my patients.
However, many people come to see me having experimented with minoxidil before being made aware of how to use it correctly, how to avoid it doing more damage than good, or when to expect results.

It isn’t for every type of hair loss or every patient.

So, while it is great to have an over the counter treatment like this, I believe it is very important to consult with a professional before using it, and to know whether it is evidence based for your diagnosis.

Does your shower look like mine every day? πŸšΏπŸ§ πŸ’‡β€β™€οΈ

If you've ever noticed more hair in your brush, on your pillow, or lining the shower wall, your mind probably starts racing:

"Was it the new shampoo?"
"Did I damage my hair with my blow-dryer?"
"Was it that stressful week?"

But in many cases, increased shedding isn't caused by something you did yesterday.

One of the most common causes of diffuse hair shedding is Telogen Effluvium (TE) β€” a condition where a larger-than-normal percentage of hairs are shifted into the resting (telogen) phase before being shed.

Here's the important part:

πŸ‘‰ The hairs falling out today were often signalled to shed 3–4 months ago.

That means the trigger is usually found months before the shedding begins, not in the product you started last week or the supplement you forgot to take on Sunday.

Common TE triggers can include:
β€’ Illness or infection
β€’ Childbirth
β€’ Rapid weight loss or restrictive dieting
β€’ Nutritional deficiencies
β€’ Emotional stress
β€’ Surgery or anaesthesia
β€’ Medication changes
β€’ Hormonal shifts

The good news? In many cases, Telogen Effluvium is temporary and the follicles are already working on producing new hairs while the shedding is occurring.

The key is determining whether you're dealing with:

βœ”οΈ A one-off trigger that will self-correct over time

OR

βœ”οΈ An ongoing trigger that continues to signal excessive shedding until addressed

What won't stop an active shedding event once it's already been triggered?

❌ A miracle shampoo
❌ A scalp massage routine
❌ A fancy hair tonic
❌ A supplement taken for a week

Once the signal has been sent, the process generally needs to run its course.

What you can do:
βœ“ Maintain a healthy scalp environment
βœ“ Continue gentle hair care practices
βœ“ Support regrowth through nutrition, sleep and lifestyle factors
βœ“ Investigate potential underlying triggers if shedding persists

If your shedding has been ongoing for several months, it may be time to look deeper and identify what's keeping the cycle active.

Have you ever been surprised to learn that the cause of today's shedding may actually be hiding 3–4 months in the past? Let me know below πŸ‘‡

7 months. No prescriptions. No invasive procedures. Just consistency.

One of the most challenging parts of treating female pattern thinning is helping patients understand that success isn't always dramatic regrowth overnight.

Sometimes success looks like:
- Slowing or stopping progression
- Reducing inflammation around the follicle
- Supporting miniaturised hairs to become stronger and thicker
-Creating a healthier scalp environment for long-term growth
-Feeling more confident and motivated to stay the course

This lovely patient has been following a relatively gentle, self-managed home treatment plan for just 7 months. While there is still work to do, we're already seeing encouraging signs:
β€’ No obvious progression of thinning
β€’ Improved overall fullness through the mid-scalp
β€’ Some fine hairs appearing to increase in diameter
β€’ Reduced peri-follicular inflammation in certain areas under trichoscopy

Hair loss treatment is rarely about perfection, it's about stacking small wins over time.

One of the biggest reasons people abandon treatment is because they're only looking for dramatic changes. Yet in clinic, some of the most meaningful outcomes start with subtle improvements that signal we're moving in the right direction.

This follow-up was a great reminder that progress isn't always loud.

🌱 Celebrate the small wins.
🌱 Stay consistent.
🌱 Trust the process.

If you're concerned about hair thinning and don't know where to start, a proper diagnosis is always the first step.
