One of the stories that shaped ByStorm is my friend Alicia’s.

It was her year 12 school formal, and she was so excited; hair, makeup, nails all booked, ready for the big day. So she heads to the local nail salon and picks out the perfect shade of blue to match her dress. The manicurist paints one hand perfectly. But when Alicia offers her other hand - affected by cerebral palsy - the woman's face turns to a complete look of disgust. She refuses to paint it. see refuses to touch it, like she could catch something from her.

On what should’ve been a day she felt so proud, she was humiliated. Treated like she didn’t belong. Like something was wrong with her.

She laughs about it now. But she’s never gone back to a nail salon.

But here's the thing, this story is not unique. If you are living with a disability, I know you have one just like it.

Because when spaces aren’t accessible, and we don't see people with disability in those spaces, we make harmful assumptions. Like,' disabled people don’t need makeup'. and that has long-lasting effects on our community.
That is why we exist.
