Tiny cars, half-finished spaceships, and multicolored towers sprawled across the living room rug like the aftermath of a colorful war. Every few minutes came the crash of plastic bricks, followed by Ethan's delighted giggle or sudden frustrated whine.

Mark tried. He really did. "Buddy, maybe we can build something together?" he called from the kitchen. No answer. Just more crashing.

Then it happened.

Ethan, in a burst of pure chaotic energy, swung his favorite red fire truck like a wrecking ball. It collided with the tall blue tower Mark had secretly admired earlier (the one Ethan had actually let stand for almost ten whole minutes). He looked at the bat. Then at his crying son surrounded by colorful wreckage. Then at his wife, who looked ready to call 911 or divorce him — possibly both at once.

Slowly, very slowly, he lowered the bat.

He dropped to his knees among the Lego pieces, ignoring the painful stab of a stray brick under his knee. "Hey… hey, buddy," he said softly, voice cracking. "I'm sorry. Daddy got really mad for a second. I didn't mean to scare you."

Ethan sniffled, wiping his nose on his yellow shirt. "You… you were gonna smash my cars?"

Mark winced. "I thought about it. But I won't. Promise." He gently picked up the red fire truck and placed it back in Ethan's hands. "These are your cars. You built them. They're awesome."

Sarah exhaled, lowering her hands. She knelt too, pulling Ethan into a hug while giving Mark a look that said *we're talking about this later*.

Mark started gathering bricks. "How about we build something even bigger? Like… a Lego castle? With a dragon?"

Ethan peeked out from his mom's shoulder. His tears slowed. "With a trap door?"
