Reducing the burdens of electronic health record use:

EHRs have played an instrumental role in the healthcare industry’s journey towards digitalization, but the switch has brought myriad problems associated with cognitive overload, endless documentation, and user burnout.

EHR developers are now using artificial intelligence to create more intuitive interfaces and automate some of the routine processes that consume so much of a user’s time.

Users spend the majority of their time on three tasks: clinical documentation, order entry, and sorting through the in-basket, said Adam Landman, MD, Vice President and CIO at Brigham Health.

Voice recognition and dictation are helping to improve the clinical documentation process, but natural language processing (NLP) tools might not be going far enough.

“I think we may need to be even bolder and consider changes like video recording a clinical encounter, almost like police wear body cams,” said Landman. “And then you can use AI and machine learning to index those videos for future information retrieval.

Digital health, which is the use of information and communication technology (ICT) to provide health services, can advance the goal of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare services worldwide.

Digital health can help accomplish Universal health Coverage
Today, many countries are moving to the complex task of implementing national digital health strategies, and effective leadership and cooperation approaches are needed to coordinate the often fragmented ecosystem of digital health solutions and programs, states a report from the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development’s Working Group on Digital Health.

World Health Assembly (WHA) is convening in Geneva to address the implementation of the health-related goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with a particular focus on how to make universal health coverage (UHC) a reality.

World Health Organization (WHO) published its draft Global Strategy on Digital Health, which puts digital health initiatives and greater use of technology and health information systems at the heart of achieving affordable and universal access to care. While the WHA’s focus is, understandably, on the role of the public sector, no government body, NGO or company alone can solve the myriad challenges that stand in the way of achieving universal health coverage. Achieving UHC by 2030 will only be possible if we create a collaborative ecosystem that makes the private sector and governments a major part of the digital transformation.

In the health tech sector, I see a powerful combination of data and technology innovations becoming available that can enable a value-based healthcare revolution. Governments can now confidently accelerate the deployment of connectivity and technology to deliver real impact and scale in their health systems.

No matter where we work and whether we are in public sector or
private sector, change has become a fact of life in today’s workplace especially due to the
external forces like – globalization, right sizing and fast developing technologies - mainly due to
information technology. It appears in different forms with different names: introduction of new
technology, shift in strategy, decentralization and de-layering, new emphasis on quality or
innovation, or implementation of new team-based and demand driven projects and programs,
modernization, re-inventing, rethinking/restructuring/re-engineering, rightsizing, etc.

A positive attitude in health care professions can also impact the actual job performance. From dealing with stressors of the job, to crafting creative solutions to problems, to managing your interpersonal relationships with co-workers, having a positive demeanor is advantageous on many levels. We tend to be more productive and inclined to do our best when we have a positive attitude—even towards undesirable assignments. What employer doesn’t appreciate that?
