Small Children Dancing a Ring Dance (1894) by Christian Skredsvig
Christian Skredsvig (1854–1924) was a prominent Norwegian painter celebrated for his landscapes and genre scenes. In this delicate drawing, he captures a circle of small children performing a traditional ring dance — a communal folk ritual symbolizing unity, rhythm, and the continuity of life.
Executed with light, fluid strokes, the sketch conveys both movement and innocence: the children’s flowing garments and outstretched arms form a dynamic circle that seems to pulse with vitality. The simplicity of the composition enhances its intimacy, evoking childhood as a space of freedom and collective joy.
Although best known for his naturalistic landscapes, Skredsvig also explored everyday life and folk traditions. He was loosely associated with the Skagen Painters — the Scandinavian artists’ colony in Denmark — where he absorbed the group’s sensitivity to light, nature, and human togetherness.

The Art of Art in Motion
Dance is more than movement—it is poetry written in air, a silent language that speaks to the soul. In ballet, every step, every turn, every extension is a conversation between strength and elegance, discipline and freedom.
Grace is not just about beauty; it is about control, effort hidden behind effortless flow. It is the way a dancer makes the impossible look weightless, as if gravity is merely a suggestion.
To move with grace is to embody music, to breathe through movement, to turn the stage into a dream. Ballet teaches us that true elegance lies not just in form but in feeling—the ability to make every motion resonate beyond the body, into the hearts of those who watch.

«Ballet Scene»
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's painting, 1886.
The painting captures a backstage scene or rehearsal of a ballet, showcasing ballerinas in various states of activity and rest.
Toulouse-Lautrec's characteristic style, merging elements of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, is evident in the loose brushstrokes and muted yet expressive colors.
The composition features five ballerinas, with some engaged in conversation and others in individual moments of movement or pause, conveying the dynamic and raw energy of the ballet world.
The painting offers a glimpse into the theatrical life of 19th-century Paris, a subject that fascinated Toulouse-Lautrec and other artists of the era.

The image depicts August Macke's painting "Russian Ballet I" (also known as "Ballet Russes I") from 1912.
This Expressionist painting captures a scene from the famous Ballets Russes performance of Carnaval, choreographed by Mikhail Fokine to music by Robert Schumann.
Macke was particularly inspired by the performance he saw in Cologne in 1912, attending it multiple times and creating several artworks based on the subject.
The painting specifically illustrates the dramatic climax of Carnaval, showing Harlequin abducting Columbine, while the abandoned Pierrot raises his arms in a gesture of lament.
The woman in the hat on the right side of the painting acts as a compositional element, linking the darkened audience to the brightly lit stage.
