Hairdressing is a noble profession that should be praised, just imagine how we would look without all the efforts our hairstylist put to beautify our look.

The job of a hairstylist is to take care of the health, beauty and vitality of their client's hair but the sad aspect is that some hairstylist is only knowledgeable about how to beautify the hair and they are ignorant of how to maintain the health and vitality of the hair which is the most important aspect to growing healthy and long hair
This topic is very personal to me because of the damage that has been done to a lot of people's hair. I decided to write about this topic because our next series of content will focus on hair breakage treatment and the competence of your hairstylist is a contributing factor to the success of this treatment

The following points are signs that you should scare you off from a hairstylist

1) A hairstylist that does not educate you against actions that will damage your hair ( Using weave in or feed in braids back to back without giving the scalp a rest)

2) A hairstylist that will never allow you to know the products they are using for your hair( don't use products from salons ignorantly) always ask about what they are putting on your hair

3) A hairstylist that doesn't know how to properly detangle, shampoo and condition your natural hair. A lot of hairstylists don't know how to properly handle natural hair. Natural hair is very delicate and it can easily break off

4) Runaway from a hairstylist that doesn't follow the instructions written on how to use a product and they rely on what they know. The instructions are on the label of a product should be strictly adhered to.

5) For those with relaxed hair, your stylist should properly protect your scalp before the application of a relaxer

6) The relaxer should only be applied to the new growth of the hair and not the processed part of the hair

7) Not all hairdressers are colourist, ensure that your hairdresser is a certified colourist to avoid damage to your hair

8) Runaway from any hairdresser that practices poor hygiene especially with the salon tools they use. Safety is paramount in every salon, ensure their combs and towels are properly washed before it is used on your hair and blades are not reused on your hair. Your health and the health of your scalp is very important.
9) Never allow a hairdresser to over manipulate your hair especially around the edges (alopecia is one thing you would hate to tackle)

If possible learn to take care of your hair by yourself so that when you visit a salon you can know what to expect from your hairstylist.
Finally, Google is your friend, do your research if you and your hairstylist have a different opinion.
A beautiful style only lasts for a moment but the health and vitality of your hair should last for a lifetime.

Have you ever had a bad experience with your hairstylist before?
