People often ask which soaps are “for men” and which are “for women.” The funny thing is, scent preferences rarely follow those rules according to my 10+ years of soap making experience.

Some of our most popular bars with women feature woody, earthy, minty, or smoky notes. And plenty of men gravitate toward florals, sweet, citrus, and lighter scents. And then there are those who skip scent altogether and reach straight for our unscented bars.

Today’s photo happens to feature soaps with more woodsy, minty, and earthy profiles — (from top to bottom) High Park, Arctic Rain shampoo bar, Stonewood, Midtown, Frost, and Pure Charcoal + Salt — but I don’t really think of them as men’s soaps.

They’re simply different scent experiences. The best soap is the one you can’t stop picking up and smelling... or not smelling.

What scent profile do you find yourself reaching for most often?

Creator’s notes — Midtown Soap!
My life in Toronto started in Midtown.
As a student, I spent a lot of time around Davisville, Mount Pleasant, and Yonge Street. Everyday after classes, I’d wander the neighbourhood, stopping at coffee shops, browsing unique stores, and occasionally treating myself to a restaurant meal that felt like a big splurge on a student budget.

Midtown has changed a lot since then, but I still have fond memories of those early years and all the new experiences that came with them.

This soap is inspired by the balance I associate with the area: glass office/condo towers, quiet tree-lined streets, and the steady rhythm of city life. Bright bitter citrus notes bring freshness, while soft woods and frankincense add a calm, grounded feeling. The dark slate blue base reflects that contrast between urban energy and comforting green spaces.

A small tribute to the neighbourhood where my Canadian story began.

The best part of having a small business is definitely the customers. It’s always such a pleasure to receive kind words and thoughtful feedback. I read every review and message that comes in, and thought I’d share a few recent ones here. Always grateful to hear how these bars become part of people’s everyday routines.

Creator’s notes — Leslieville Soap
Whenever I create something new, it’s always a long but fun process. Soapmaking has so many elements with no single right answer, and I get to decide what each bar becomes. Here are a few creative notes and inspirations behind one of our newest bars, Leslieville Soap.

Meadow shampoo bars are back in stock!

When Meadow first launched, it was meant to be a softer, lavender-forward take on our popular Bayside shampoo bar.

I liked the scent right away. Calm, herbaceous, and a little like standing in a field of wildflowers. But as much as I enjoyed it, Meadow still felt too close to Bayside. It had the same foundation, just in a different scent, and I kept feeling like it could become something more distinct.

Even after Meadow sold out, I kept it on the website. I wasn’t ready to remake the same bar, but I wasn’t ready to let it go either. I knew there was something more in it, even if I wasn’t quite sure what that was yet, so I gave myself time to think about what Meadow could become.

Earlier this year, I came back to it with a clearer idea.

I wanted Meadow to become the shampoo bar I’d reach for when someone is trying one of our shampoo bars for the first time. Something easy to like. Something that lathers generously, rinses more easily, feels gentle on the scalp, and still stays true to how we make things — without factory-made artificial surfactants or unnecessary fillers.

I started with our Bayside formula as the base and reworked it from there. I added camellia oil, re-balanced the full oil blend, and began testing a few ingredients that were new to me.

That part is always equal parts exciting and nerve-racking.

Cationic guar gum was one of the biggest changes. It’s a plant-derived conditioning ingredient that helps soften and smooth the hair, making the bar feel a little easier and more approachable to use. I also added sodium lactate (AKA milk salt), which helps improve slip and rinse. The difference is subtle, but to me, it matters.

The new Meadow lathers into a richer, creamier foam. It feels softer in use, rinses more easily, and leaves the hair feeling smoother than before. It still has the same gentle lavender-centred scent I loved from the beginning, but now it feels more complete.

More thoughtful. More intentional. More like itself. Still Meadow. Just better.

I’ve been enjoying my bike rides a little extra lately.

Cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and they never stay long. That might be part of what makes them so lovely.

Earth Day — all year round. 🌍🍀
No greenwashing, just the way we’ve always done it from the Day 1.
Kraft paper mailers, post-consumer recycled paper wrapping, plant-based simple ingredients, no synthetics, made by hand. With love and care.

We're a small operation, but we believe the small choices add up.

Beautiful soaps are nice.
Soaps that work are better.

Every Skipping Stone bar is designed function-first — the way it lathers, rinses, and feels on your skin is the whole point. The look and scent? A bonus.

From our updated Meadow shampoo bars with their fine, easy-rinsing lather, to the gentle face-focused bars like Adzuki, Rosedale and Sake Kasu soaps — we hope the first use says it all.
