💕 This is a speech Fannie made at a Mary Kay Seminar:

I have been asked why I wrote about Mary Kay in my book.

And, you are the reason, because you are my heroines.
You are the working women of this country.
You are the people that get up every day, pay your taxes, and I admire you so.

My mother was a wonderful woman who didn't have a chance in life.
She was in a bad marriage for many, many years and just couldn't get out because she didn't have any hope.

And, Mary Kay came along and gave her hope.

She used to read about Mary Kay and say, "Oh honey, You know, that's something I can do." And, she would dream about earning a pink Cadillac.

Unfortunately, my mother passed away before she realized her dream.

When I came in today, I looked around and thought:
Oh, had she only lived long enough to become a Mary Kay Consultant.

Look at the friends she would have made, the beautiful family she would've had.
Her life would've been totally changed.

So when I wrote the book, I wanted to write about a woman who was despondent, who thought she was worth nothing.

This society tells us women are not worth much, particularly if you have a few pounds on you.
And, I thought about what would change this woman's life?

The only thing I could think that would change a woman's life so drastically and so for-the-better is Mary Kay.

She is my heroine. She cares so much for women, and she meant so much to my mother.
I am so thrilled to just be on the same stage as this woman.

Fannie Flagg Seminar Speech 1992 with the original recipe
Fried Green Tomatoes
Ingredients:
1 medium green tomato per person
salt
pepper
white cornmeal
bacon drippings

Directions:
Slice tomato about 1/4 inch thick, season with salt and pepper.

Then, coat both sides with cornmeal. In a large skillet, heat enough bacon drippings to coat the bottom. Fry tomato slices until lightly browned on both sides.

Take the time to try something new , something unfamiliar, answer to a yearning deep in your heart… and imagine the possibilities.. thank you, Mary Kay Ash… thank you Fannie Flagg.
