An esthetician’s honest opinion on the trends I see doing the most damage.

Over-exfoliating, harsh acne routines, toothpaste on pimples..three things that are everywhere online and three things I watch clients come in recovering from regularly.

Here’s the truth about each one.

Over-exfoliating strips the skin barrier faster than it can repair itself. You get a temporary glow followed by weeks of sensitivity, redness, and breakouts that weren’t there before. The skin is not supposed to feel tight and raw. Than’s damage, not cleansing.

Harsh acne routines — the ones loaded with drying acids, sulfates, and spot treatments used all at once. Treat acne like it’s a hygiene problem. It’s not. Drying out your skin doesn’t clear acne. It triggers more oil production, weakens the barrier, and creates the cycle most of my clients have been stuck in for years.

Toothpaste on a pimple. The fluoride and baking soda in toothpaste are not formulated for skin. It can cause a chemical burn on already inflamed skin. Please stop.
