Every morning, we get out of a bed in which we spent the entire night before with the dream of Iran’s freedom and the fear of whether our families are alive or not.
We get dressed and leave the house, stepping into streets covered in snow. All the while, we think about the fact that none of our family members can let us know how they leave home to obtain their basic necessities. My sister is fighting cancer. She has to go to the laboratory and the hospital every week. How does she get her medication? The prices of imported medicines were so high that all of us had joined hands to somehow manage the costs. Now, however, we cannot send any money at all, and all ways of communication have been completely cut off. What are we supposed to do?

The photos and videos that have reached us report the killing of 12,000 people in two days. Syrian and Iraqi forces have been brought into the country to open fire on Iranians. How are we supposed to endure this?

I come back to myself. Standing by the chair, I look at the smiling face of my client with her beautiful hair. I have a smile on my face. How is this possible?
I make coffee, offer cookies to my customer. She talks about her exciting beach trip, full of enthusiasm. I laugh out loud with her. How is this possible?

In my mind, the sound of gunfire sprayed at our families, at Iranian youth, is deafening. Every moment, this level of violence feels unreal to me, yet I continue discussing with my coworkers the number of balloons and the colors of birthday decorations,what flavor the cake should be, and what kind of flowers. How is this possible? How do I go on with such a vast difference between my inner world and my outer life?

I think of a movie about a Mossad spy who, the moment he changed his clothes, transformed from an ordinary father and husband into a ruthless killer and a full time spy.
I am exactly playing that role.
At every moment, with a big smile, I tell interesting and engaging stories in English to those around me, while in Persian, every cells of my being continues in anger, grief, and despair toward the world, filled with the hope for Iran’s freedom.

I don’t know me.
I am not me.
