instagram vs reality: Hopewell Rocks edition.

WHAT INSTAGRAM SHOWS YOU
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
✨ Empty ocean floor
✨ Perfect golden light
✨ You, alone, tiny beneath giant rocks
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
WHAT YOU ACTUALLY GET
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
😅 MUD. Ankle-deep, red, shoe-destroying mud.
😅 A few hundred other people with the same idea
😅 Grey Bay of Fundy fog half the time
😅 A long walk back UP the stairs nobody warns you about
😅 Rangers moving you off the floor as the tide returns
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
THE PART NOBODY TELLS YOU
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Show up at high tide and there is no beach. At all.
The water rises up to 16 metres here — the highest tides on Earth. 100 billion tonnes move through this bay every cycle, more than every river in the world combined.
That “empty ocean floor” is underwater 6 hours later.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
SO IT’S NOT WORTH IT?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
It’s absolutely worth it. You’re standing on the bottom of the ocean. Just go in with the right expectations:
✅ Check the tide chart BEFORE you book
✅ Aim for low tide, arrive right when it opens
✅ Wear shoes you’re willing to ruin
✅ Give yourself 2 hours, not 30 minutes
Still one of the wildest things I’ve stood on. Just muddier than the photos.

The tide stats are verified. The reason this format works better than a straight beauty reel: the “instagram vs reality” hook gets the stop, but the tide-chart warning is the part people save — it’s the difference between a good trip and driving 3 hours to see water.
One thing to get right in the edit: don’t make reality look bad. Make it look funny. T

(Most people can’t even watch this without sweating.)
Montmorency Falls. Quebec.
Here’s what you’re looking at:
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
THE ZIPLINE
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
📍 300 metres across the falls
📍 You fly DIRECTLY in front of the waterfall
📍 83 metres of water crashing below you
📍 That’s TALLER than Niagara Falls
📍 Yes. Taller. Look it up.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
THE FACTS NOBODY KNOWS
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Montmorency Falls: 83 metres
Niagara Falls: 51 metres
Niagara gets 12 million visitors a year.
Montmorency gets a fraction of that.
Everyone’s staring at the wrong waterfall.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
WAYS TO EXPERIENCE IT
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
😱 Zipline across the face of it
🌉 Suspension bridge directly over the drop
🚡 Cable car to the top
🥾 487-step staircase (free + brutal)
📸 Viewing platforms at every level
Only 15 minutes from Quebec City.
This was one stop on my 2,300 KM
Toronto → PEI road trip.
The one that made my heart drop.
So... who’s doing the zipline?

Meanwhile PEI has:

An island. In your own country.
No passport. No currency exchange. No jet lag.
