Lughnasadh of Celtic mythology: . One of the great festivals of the Irish year is Lughnasadh, which celebrated the beginning of the harvest season and the ripening if the first fruits. Irish mythology tells how the great god Lug, or Light, first established the feast of Lughnasadh to commemorate his foster mother Tailtiu, who died clearing the plains of Ireland so that they could be farmed. Lughnasadh is celebrated with games, horse racing, forest picking and dancing, as well as feasting. In fact, the festival is still celebrated in many parts of Ireland and by the Irish diaspora around the world. It has become a time when far-flung families traditionally gather together. In different events, this day marked the start of harvesting in the rural calendar period of hard work. Which culminated in the harvest home festival. Rural people believed the Harvest Spirit dwelt in the fields, and that as the reapers cut the corn, the spirit was forced to retreat into the ever-dwindling remainder. No man wished to be the one who destroyed her refuge, so the reapers took turns to throw their sickles at the last stand of corn.
