Strangles awareness week in May helped us bring awareness to the rise in strangles and help us to understand just how vigilant we need to be as horse owners , yard owners, equine transportation and event organisers… continued conversations, good bio security protocols and sharing knowledge can help us to better control the spread…. Knowledge is power.

Next week is beginning to look a lot cooler, and it can be super tempting to start planning to work your horse a bit more regularly given that a lot of them would have had a quiet week this week.
However, we must consider a series of different factors that all most certainly we are affecting our horses even post – heat wave.
– Very hard compacted ground
– consistently dry, dusty air
– loss of fitness
– high pollen counts
– a lot of time spent bracing and swatting away flies!
So before returning to any faster work, or work that will demand cardiovascular fitness, consider all of the factors above and also have a really good look at this diagram to really appreciate the extent to which our horses have to exert.
