A study led by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, investigated the impact of certain personal care products on chemical exposure among teenage girls. The study involved 100 Latina teenagers aged 14 to 18, who were asked to switch from their usual personal care products to alternatives free from specific chemicals—namely phthalates, parabens, triclosan, and oxybenzone—for three days.  

Urine samples collected before and after the intervention revealed significant decreases in the concentrations of these chemicals: 
• Parabens: Methyl and propyl parabens, commonly used as preservatives in cosmetics, showed a reduction of 44% and 45%, respectively. 
• Triclosan: An antibacterial agent found in some soaps and toothpaste, triclosan levels decreased by 36%. 
• Benzophenone-3 (Oxybenzone): Often used in sunscreens, this chemical saw a 36% reduction. 
• Diethyl Phthalate: Commonly used in fragrances, levels dropped by 27%. 

❣️These findings suggest that even a short-term change to personal care products free from certain chemicals can significantly reduce the body’s chemical burden. The study underscores the potential benefits of choosing products with fewer endocrine-disrupting chemicals, especially during adolescence—a critical period of development.  

🔬This research aligns with broader concerns about the presence of hormone-altering chemicals in personal care products used by teenagers. Another study by the Environmental Working Group found 16 toxic chemicals in blood and urine samples from 20 teen girls aged 14-19, including preservatives, fragrance, and antimicrobial compounds, many linked to serious health risks in lab animals, even at low-dose levels.
