25 Reasons why Beauty Salons should open and why no one should be secretly happy that jobs and businesses could be lost.

Claudia Connell feels that spray tans are humiliating, and wax strips are revolting. She wrote a huge article to explain why she is glad beauty salons are still in lockdown, whilst doing her absolute best to discredit an industry that employs one in every 60 in the UK workforce, provides £7 billion in UK tax revenues and provides a diversity of employees in age, gender, ethnicity and sexual orientation.

It is an industry that also has a significant effect on the high street which is facing even tougher times in this new landscape of social intervention, health and well-being.

I am proud to be in an industry that provides diversity, innovation, flexible working, including working from home, government and internationally recognised training qualifications, opportunities for travel, and career advancement, and a commitment to client care, including safeguarding, infection and disease prevention and control that runs parallel to those working on the front line.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-8480383/25-reasons-secretly-happy-beauty-salons-arent-opening-yet.html

Here’s my take on the 25 points made in the article;

1. Spray tans are a great confidence boost for many, and compared to a UV tan, offers a skin safe holiday glow at a reasonable price. If your tan doesn’t last, it could be because skin preparation of scrubbing and moisturising weren’t performed up to 14 days prior to your salon tan. Colour density also plays a part, but most professional tans are guaranteed for between 5-10 days.

2. Inch loss wraps were a very popular trend, fluid retention can be a problem for some, and treatments can often offer a much-needed psychological boost to a well-placed but not yet executed health plan. As with all things, we know that we can’t melt fat by trussing ourselves up like a Christmas turkey, however they can make skin feel nice and smooth, and offer benefits of moisturisation, and an often much needed break from hectic schedules. Losing a little bit of fluid through sweat can often give us a boost to get back into a healthier regime. There is no quick fix, but a quick boost can play it’s part in a longer commitment to well-being.

3. Appointment slots are well timed for beauty treatments, and in the hands of a professional, much can be accomplished. If you’ve booked a treatment it will factor in times for dressing and un******ng, unless of course you want to turn up naked to allow more time, and although consultations may feel like a waste of time, beauty therapists do have in-depth knowledge and training in anatomy and physiology, including specialised skin knowledge. This can be an important factor when we look at products and skin types, especially where allergies are concerned.

4. Not all salons offer paper knickers, most salons will encourage you to bring your own old underwear for your comfort and discreteness, or just go commando, it’s easier for us to work that way, and we see bodies daily.

5. The ridiculously long questionnaire is to provide in-depth information that beauty therapists actually need. Yes, we may need to know about surgeries because we can then ask about healing, scaring, important information for invasive treatments. Our intention is to build a good working relationship with our clients and if something were to happen to you in the salon, or you left without your bag and phone, we’ve got someone to contact, so yes next of kin is important.

6. There’s nothing pretentious about treatments, beauty is part of therapeutic intervention, mindset is so important. We’re allowing clients a little bit of precious downtime to get the very best from their experience with us. We want you to feel nourished, nurtured, rebalanced, energised, and we know you do to.

7. Beauty salons do their very best to provide a safe haven for clients to relax and unwind, they also spend time explaining procedures to clients so that they’re fully aware of any discomfort level and always test products on a client’s skin gaining consent before proceeding. However sometimes we cannot be held responsible for a client who may feel pain more acutely than what’s considered normal and wants to tell everyone.

8. Beauticians try their best to make sure clients are well cared for, warm and comfortable, as lying still can cause body temperature to drop. However, we ask throughout if a client is comfortable so if they’re too hot they only need to say.

9. Creating a sense of calm and quiet is often demonstrated by voice tone and volume, it’s not patronising, we want you to understand exactly what’s going to happen in a clear and quiet tone so that you can relax, which may seem a little odd if you’re schedule is normally manic, but if you allow it, you may even find a little bit of inner peace.

10. Washing our feet is great way to feel refreshed and relaxed, especially if we’ve been rushing around. Why not enjoy a therapeutic ritual and foot refresh, even if you’re having a facial, a top to toe treatment is an added bonus.

11. When a massage therapists asks you about pressure, it’s up to you to set the pace of pummelling, otherwise we wouldn’t ask you, one person’s pleasure is another’s idea of pain, we can’t always read minds so you only need to say.

12. Traditional Polish takes a while to dry so if you prefer that over gel, bring your own flipflops and be prepared, otherwise we can offer disposable salon one’s but they may not be up to a hike home as they’re designed for indoor use.

13. When a massage therapist asks you to relax, it’s because they care about you enough to understand that massage is much more comfortable if you allow the therapist to do the work they’re trained to do. Couches are more robust than you might feel, and we will cover as much or as little of your body that you are comfortable with.

14. If you don’t like music just say, most salons play royalty free music as licenses are prohibitively expensive, and generic music can have more appeal for a relaxing treatment, but we will switch it off, just ask, it’s your treatment.

15. If you want a pedicure that doesn’t feel like a production line, go to a salon that offers a more bespoke treatment, there’s plenty out there, however if you want to find a salon that offers a no-appointment walk in, you’ll have to get in line.

16. If you find spray tanning humiliating, let the therapist know, and they can offer a lie down manual application. Spray tanning is a quicker more effective method for all over body tanning, but if you don’t want a full body, quick, even tan, there are alternatives.

17. The instruments lined up for your pedicure are fully sterilised and cleaned for each individual and are placed on a towel for hygiene. If you don’t know what they’re all for ask your therapist to talk you through them.

18. Threading gives a great shape and some prefer it over other hair removal treatments such as plucking or waxing. The key is a great stretch of the skin, so work with your therapist and stretch the skin to reduce pulling and dragging which can be uncomfortable.

19. Fall asleep, snore, pass-wind, dribble, we don’t mind.

20. Seeing plenty of hair on your wax strip, means the therapist is doing a great job. Reputable salons use yellow clinical waste bins for body hair, so you should never see another person’s wax strips.

21. We don’t need to talk to clients unless we’re giving them instructions. Bikini waxing normally involves some client interaction with skin stretching to reduce drag, and we also want to know how comfortable you are, so we tend not to focus on small talk, but we will try our best to make you feel at ease, especially when a client looks terrified. Relax we wax intimate areas all the time.

22. Modern facials are more than just chucking product on your skin, we actually undergo a lot of training in skin analysis, and product application, ask us, we’ll be more than happy to share what we know about your specific skin needs.

23. With so many polishes to choose from, if we don’t have the exact one, we will have at least five others that are close to it.

24. Nail products that need LED or UV will have a smell, that shouldn’t give you a headache in most professional well ventilated salons, your hands won’t burn under UV but the components in gel applications can feel hot when they bind, that’s why we tell you to remove your hand momentarily if you feel initial discomfort.

25. If you want a fake tan to be perfect, wear loose clothing on arrival and leave your underwear at home.

We’re prepared and ready to take our clients and are livelihoods back, not all of us benefited from government support. Our cleanliness and client procedures have always been designed to protect everyone, we have increased our hygiene training and PPE without government guidance because we already have an in-depth knowledge of infection prevention and bloodborne pathogens. We are ready to adapt to the new pandemic and have always had our client’s and our own safety at the heart of what we do.

Let us do what we do best, in a time when physical and mental health is at a critical stage, let us do our part to embrace what will be the new normal. That way we can at least feel that things are getting back to where they were, and we can continue to service the nation, and the economy.

We’re getting ready to open our doors once the government agree it’s safe to do so. In the meantime we will be preparing our areas ready to welcome our clients back into what I’m sure will become a new normal. Rest assured your safety is at the forefront of what we do. If you have any concerns or have been shielding please feel free to message us. We’ve been fortunate enough to have been working for the NHS during this lockdown period so have set our standards in line with clinical area management, and will work within any guidelines set to ensure you’re being cared for.

Once we receive guidelines from the government we will be reopening our doors.

We’re now home based in a specially converted space so are able to provide the highest level of protection, with space given between clients for regular sanitation, PPE, and distancing measures in place where appropriate.

We recognise the importance of key services and welcome the opportunity of seeing everyone again once it is deemed safe to open our doors to the public.

As lockdown hit we had already become exposed to covid 19, fortunately we had already stopped seeing clients a few weeks before as client safety has always been of the highest importance.

After the recommended self isolation period we were fortunate enough to have access to testing as a frontline worker for the NHS during lockdown.

Antibody tests could confirm whether people are immune to COVID-19, either due to having recovered from the illness or due to vaccination (once a vaccine becomes available). Immune individuals would be able to interact with others without fear of spreading COVID-19 or becoming infected themselves, and would be able to serve essential roles in healthcare and in reopening the economy.

Most infectious disease experts think it’s likely that COVID-19 does induce some degree of immunity in those who recover from it, but this has yet to be proven. Whether immunity to COVID-19 might last a few weeks, a few years, or lifelong is also an open question.

Please feel free to get in contact to book a provisional appointment, and we will look forward to confirming once clear government guidance is received.
