• Look for the exact plant name (e.g. Lavandula angustifolia)
• Watch out for vague terms like “fragrance” or “parfum”
• Check if it’s 100% pure or diluted with unknown ingredients

Citronella essential oil is one of the most popular natural insect repellents, and there’s solid science behind why it works. Here are some clear, useful facts:

🌿 What citronella oil is
• It’s extracted from certain types of lemongrass plants, mainly Cymbopogon nardus and Cymbopogon winterianus.
• The oil has a strong citrus-like scent that humans usually find pleasant—but insects don’t.

🦟 How it repels bugs
• Citronella doesn’t “kill” insects—it masks the scents (like carbon dioxide and body odor) that attract bugs such as mosquitoes.
• This makes it harder for insects to locate you.

🔬 What bugs it works against
• Most effective against:
• Mosquitoes
• Flies
• Gnats


⏱️ How long it lasts
• It evaporates quickly, so protection is short-term (about 1–2 hours) unless reapplied.
• That’s why it’s often used in candles, sprays, and lotions that need frequent refreshing.

🧪 Key active compounds
• The main bug-repelling components include:
• Citronellal
• Geraniol
• Citronellol
These interfere with insects’ sensory receptors.
