A little manual extraction of ear wax this morning.

A hard wax plug removed from an ear today.

This was completely blocking the patients ear and they had lost all hearing in one ear.

Now although I find these types of wax removal
Extremely satisfying it is not ideal and can be extremely painful (luckily not in those case).

This wax is dry and as hard as a rock, ideally it is best to have really soft wax, which is achieved by applying lots of olive oil for at least 5 days before your treatment (longer if possible).

Just remember to ONLY use OLIVE OIL drops☑️✅

🚫 No Otex express drops
🚫 No sodium bi carbonate drops

Well this one had me stumped, questioning myself, my knowledge and my life in general 🤯

I was contacted by a previous client advising they had a blockage in their ear and advised they thought it was a stuck cotton bud.

On inspection the blockage looked fibrous and I could tell instantly this wasn’t ‘just wax’.

I tried for over an hour to remove the blockage, it was rock hard, solid and completely blocked.

My trusty suction unit just couldn’t get enough suction on this to remove it.

Feeling completely outdone I advised my client to go to A&E and ask to be seen urgently by ENT for further advice and treatment - all images and notes were provided to client to take with them.

Whilst they were at A&E I got a message from my client saying that the medical staff there were saying the ear was clear and nothing wrong 😡
I urged them to stay there and demand a second opinion as I knew there was a blockage.

2nd opinion came and pt was advised it was ‘just wax’ and advised to soften with oil for a week or so.

I sent an urgent review request to my online team
Of advisers - they also came back and advised this blockage was just hard wax and to soften with oil for 2 weeks.

Something just didn’t sit right, I felt so confused and really started to question my knowledge and abilities, how could I not know this was just wax?
But I’d never seen anything like it before.

I was convinced this wasn’t ‘just wax’

My client pursued another opinion at a different a&e department and as advised demanded to be seen by ENT.

Thankfully they were given got antibiotics (cover for potential infection following ear impaction) and also an ENT referral who managed to remove the blockage (pic 2).

Lo and behold the blockage was a cotton bud tip covered in wax!!

My client had pushed this right down into the ear and compacted it into a solid lump trying to get it out and further had pushed any wax down with it, creating this solid mass - which no amount of oil was ever going to resolve.

I’m so glad my client got the help and treatment
they needed (finally) but I am so annoyed at myself
For not being able to help in the first instance😢

Please be assured that I will always do my absolute best to help with any issues and if I can’t resolve it I will get you the help needed.

The message to take away from this is - don’t put anything in your ears, no matter how tempting it is !!!
