At our barber academy we believe in drilling the hand to eye coordination required to use the main cutting techniques in hair. It can be boring at times, but so was painting fences for the karate kid and you know the rest of the story!

When using a dolls head these are some questions you should be asking yourself as a student…

Can you section hair?

Can you cleanly pick hair up in 1cm sections to cut?

Can you use this section as your guide and cut a whole panel to the same length?

Can you understand whether you would like a square shape or round shape or graduated shape? Do you know how to create each of these?

Do you know how to use disconnection and when you would use it?

Do you have the imagination to know where the hair will drop to once you cut it?

Do you understand that different hair textures and growth patterns will drop differently?

Can you safely and accurately use scissor over comb and clipper over comb?

Can you cut texture and remove weight using your standard scissors?

If you can answer yes to most of these, you are most certainly on the path to becoming an amazing barber.

If the answer is no, then get back on your dolls head and practice, practice, practice!!

Dolls heads enable us to practice longer hair and short scissor cuts, however fading and shaping up we need people! So please if you know anyone who’s interested in regular free haircuts then let them know we are open every Monday !!

This mornings class discussion - How do we make more money as a barber?

We discussed many answers: here are the main two;

1. Cut more hair I.e. cut faster or work longer hours

2. Cut hair better I.e. increased attention to detail, and attract clients who are willing to pay for that detail

What we discovered was both ways are both just as good as each other… however;

Which method you choose will depend on you, the way you enjoy working and what comes naturally to you.
