π Lets Build A Hive π
Our bees are loving this sunny weather, after such a miserable Spring βοΈ
They are cracking on making lots of delicious summer honey now, foraging on all the lovely summer flowers and trees πΈπ³
Busy bees means our hives needed more space and we've added more "supers" (the boxes our bees store honey in) to our hives, giving our bees the space they need.
When we add new supers our bees have lots of work to do before they can start storing honey. Each super starts with 11 wooden frames, which have a thin layer of "foundation" (a thin sheet of wax, mimicking the cell shape of honeycomb). Our bees then build this out into full honeycomb and make it wide enough to store honey π―.
This video shows you a frame of foundation that our bees built out from a thin sheet of foundation to thick honeycomb in an incredible 2 days. They have worked very fast and almost have it complete πͺ.
Aren't bees just so amazing, working non stop to make beautiful honey ππ―
π Summer Honey Progress π
A wee look inside one of our hives, which is filling up well with delicious summer honey π―
What you are looking at here is the honey comb, this is what our bees fill with honey. Here's the interesting part ........when the bees bring nectar to the hive to make honey it's the consistency of water. The bees fan this with their wings to reduce the water content. This prevents fermentation and gives honey that beautiful thick consistency π―
Water content in honey needs to be c18% or less and we test every extraction for this π§ͺ
When the honey is ready the bees cap it with white wax, which you can see they are starting to do in this video.
They are loving this sunny weather and working their wee wings off ππ―π₯°

ππΈ Salvia Hot Lips πΈπ
The first of our beautiful Salvia Hot Lips plants have been dropped off at Wester Carmuirs Farm Produce, along with some of our pink African Daisy πΈ
If you haven't heard me rave on about this spectacular Salvia, let me tell you her story......
π produces vibrant red and white flowers, shaped like a wee white nose and red lips (hence the name)
πΈ flowers from June until way through Autum. Ours flowered until December last year
βοΈ loves the sun
π an absolute bee magnet
βοΈ doesn't need too much fuss, some pruning will keep the flower production strong
π± will grown in pots, or in the ground and can be kept to a size that suits you, or left to reach her full size over 2 years (around 1m x 1m). A pic of her full size is at the end of the photos
βοΈ hardy for our climate (H5 - will tolerate down to -15 degrees)
πΉ great to companion plant with roses to help prevent black spot
πΈ grown by us in Larbert, and looked after very carefully through each stage to make sure you have a robust plant to enjoy in your garden
Just a joy to have in the garden and her long flowering just knocks the socks off annual plants for value for money πΈ
Our African Daisy is another beauty that flowers brilliantly through Autumn. Lower growing than the Salvia (c50cm) and spreads, making her a fantastic space filler πΈ
