Updated guidance to reflect changes to requirements.

1. From 1 July 2026, you will no longer need third party public liability insurance for banned breed dogs, including XL Bully dogs. Updated section ‘Third party public liability insurance’.

2. From 1 November 2026, you must not leave a child under 12 in close contact with an XL Bully dog in a private place (for example a home or garden), without adult supervision.

For those whose insurance runs out before 1st July you can renew for 1 year with dogs trust. You must have valid insurance up to and including 30 June 2026.

Meet the very handsome Bourbon.

Bourbon was initially exempted as an xl bully during the self exemption process. Sadly his owner became unwell and needed to do a transfer of keepership to a relative.

He has now been assessed by a police Dog Legislation Officer today, who has determined he is not a banned breed and does not meet enough of the criteria of any of the banned breeds.

Defra will now be informed and Bourbon can go to the family member free from all restrictions.

Today's second good news story.

Meet the very handsome Zino.

Zino was recently seized after being reported as an American Bully Xl.

He has now been assessed by a police Dog Legislation Officer who has determined he is not a banned breed and he is an American Bulldog.

Zino has been returned home today with no further action.

Today's good news story.

Meet the very handsome Chiro.

Chiro was seized after an incident. He has been held in kennels for a year whilst waiting his case going to court

Last week his case went to court and the courts granted a contingent destruction order allowing him home. Yesterday Chiro came home.

Meet the very beautiful Saffie.

Saffie was initially placed on the index of exempted dogs register during the self exemption process.

She was recently seized after a minor indcident. But after assessment she was found not to be an American Bully Xl. She has now been returned home with a control order and paperwork to state she is not a banned breed.

Today's good news story.

Meet the very handsome Major.

Major was initially self exempted but defra themselves had made mistakes which had not been corrected.

The good news is he was only seized for 2 weeks as proof was given and emails between owner and defra shown he was allowed home on the IES, Interim Exemption Scheme prior to court.

Yesterday his case went to court and the courts very satisfied have granted him exemption status.

As Major is already home his family are just waiting on the exemption papers.
