If the beauty industry had an Olympics, treatments for hyperpigmentation would be the most anticipated event ๐๐พโโ๏ธ
Here are our rankings
Microneedling๐ฅ Micro injuries disrupt and disperse pigment cells. This combined with its ability to stimulate collagen and elastin make it a great choice. However, it gets our bronze spot as you cannot have it if youโre dealing with active acne, making it less versatile than other treatments
Lasers๐ฅ These are great at tackling stubborn pigmentation and can also bring other benefits such as skin tightening. This doesnโt get our top spot as cost can be very high, downtime can be long and many lasers are not suitable for darker skin tones
Chemical Peels๐ฅ Our winner! Available in varying levels of intensity and price points, chemical peels are the top choice. They can help to lift your stubborn pigmentation whilst providing other benefits such as improving texture and acne management. A multifaceted champion ๐

These are the ingredients with the biggest ROI (i.e. the ones that are going to make the biggest difference to your skin 10 years from now)
The top 3 are the most important:
Sunscreen and Antioxidants = prevent damage and premature aging
Retinoids = a skincare workhorse that does everything from stimulating collagen + elastin production, to managing acne and fading hyperpigmentation

Is your skincare routine working with you or against you โ๏ธ
This client wanted to work on her hyperpigmentation, she has very sensitive skin and eczema. This combined with the over use of the wrong actives led to a damaged skin barrier, intense patches of dryness, irritation and tenderness, shown on our skin analysis
Weโve made so much progress in a month with a custom skincare routine and she is on track to step up to advanced treatments to tackle her hyperpigmentation
Never underestimate how influential a good skincare routine is to reach your skin goals โจ

Do you know the difference between acne scars and acne marks?
True acne scars are formed when something goes a little wrong in the wound healing process and either too much or too little collagen is created.
Too much collagen = hypertrophic (raised) acne scars
Too little collagen = atrophic (pitted) acne scars
True acne scars leave textural irregularities while acne marks leave discoloration.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) = brown marks that are caused when inflammation triggers your skin to produce too much melanin
Post-inflammatory erythema (PIE) = red marks caused by remaining inflammation after a spot/pimple has healed.
Did you know this difference?

This is a question we get a lot, and with good reason. With the sun being in more prevalent during summer, it is reasonable to assume that you have to avoid all activity that can increase sun sensitivity such as using actives and getting peels, but this is not true
It is important to realise that many people around the world in climates much warmer than ours get these treatments and use these products and are able to do so safely
The reason why autumn and winter are hailed as โpeel seasonโ is more from a social point of view. As these months are colder, people tend to have less social plans, and spend more time indoors
When youโre in a country as sun deprived as the UK, you naturally spend more time outside during warmer weather which leads to more sun exposure
It is perfectly safe for you to have treatments such as peels during summer, as long as you take the relevant sun safe precautions during your recovery such as avoiding unnecessary exposure, wearing sunscreen, and using other sun protective tools such as hats and sunglasses
What other questions do you have? Let us know in the comments so we can clarify them for you!
