Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, to give him his full title, was born to upper-class parents in 1475. His mother fell from a horse while pregnant with him, but luckily the incident had no effect on the genius she was carrying.

He was sent away to a wet nurse from a family of stonemasons as an infant, and Michelangelo believed his love of sculpture began then, stating, “… I took the hammer and chisels with which I carve my figures from my wet-nurse’s milk.”

Not only did Mike have the smarts and the skill, he lived until 88, more than twice as long as his contemporaries. In fact, his most lucrative periods of work were during his 70s and 80s. And he was hardly the isolated craftsman, managing huge teams as he undertook works for popes, politicians and the upper classes.

Many of us know and love Roy’s cartoon-style work, including his ingenious use of his Ben-Day dots in his cartoon-style works. These dots were actually created in 1879 by an illustrator and printer called Benjamin Henry Day (Ben Day to his mates), and were used as a simple way to provide fill, texture and gradient for printed work.

Typically, Roy would create his works by hand on paper, then project and paint the image onto a large canvas, after which he’d use a stencil to add his Ben-Day dot effects.

Although Roy’s art sells for many tens of millions today, critics in the 60s struggled to find his works worthwhile. In 1964, LIFE Magazine even ran a story asking, “Is He the Worst Artist in the U.S.?”

We think he’s pretty awesome. What are your thoughts?

We feel the same about flowers. In fact, we created our business because we felt sending an affordable gift that lasts forever in a few clicks was a great alternative to sending freshly cut flowers that sadly don’t last long. But back to Frida, her career as an artist began after a horrific accident at 18. The wooden bus she was travelling on collided with a streetcar. Frida was nearly killed and had to endure over 30 operations to repair spinal injuries, so she would sit in bed and paint for hours.

At Sent with Art we are naturally inspired by masters like Matisse.
Henri himself took inspiration from many sources, including Africa and its artists. He was also fascinated by nature and animals, and his beloved cats - Cousi, Minouche, and La Puce - often featured in his work.

Titian was a little more than
‘good’ - he was the superstar painter of his day. As the favoured artist of the Roman imperial court and the official portraitist for Philip Il of Spain, he received lots of cash for his efforts, plus various titles. Struggling artist he was not.

Gustav wasn’t one to accept the status quo. He was big in the anti-conservative Secession movement in Vienna, and although he died at 55 years, managed to produce around 2000 works of art. He even dressed the part, rocking a bohemian vibe in flowing robes, a cape and sandals.

Sadly, much of his art was destroyed in WW2, and, like many artistic outliers, poor Gustav didn’t find fame or fortune in his lifetime. Now, however, his iconic painting ‘the Kiss’ is known the world over, its alluring sensuality and eroticism thrilling crowds in the Belvedere Palace in Vienna.
