BBC DO BETTER There’s something we need to talk about honestly. If it was the F word it would have been muted. If it was the C word it would have been muted. If it was the P word it would have been muted. They even edited out “Free Palestine”. So why was the N word left in? Broadcasters know the power of language and the impact it has. The N word carries history pain and trauma. It should never be treated lighter than any other offensive language. At the same time we as the Black community also have to reflect. When we normalise the word in everyday speech it blurs boundaries and some people begin to believe they can say it too. They cannot. Yes the explanation given was Tourette’s. But when something happens repeatedly on a public platform the responsibility still sits with the broadcaster to protect audiences from harm. Racism still exists and accountability matters.
