What to Eat 15–30 Minutes Before a Workout (and What to Avoid!)

If you’re heading into a workout soon, skip the eggs, porridge, or slow-digesting meals. Your body needs quick-access energy and muscle support—not a full digestion session!

Here’s what works best:
• A protein shake for fast muscle fuel
• A small piece of fruit like apple or berries for fast-digesting carbs
• 5g of healthy fats (5 pecans or almonds)
• A sprinkle of Ceylon cinnamon for blood sugar control and extra antioxidants

Why it works:
• Fruit gives quick, clean energy
• Whey protein spikes amino acids to protect your muscles
• Nuts + cinnamon help blunt blood sugar spikes
• All three are rich in antioxidants, which help combat oxidative stress from training

Fast, functional, and delicious—this is my go-to fuel when I’m short on time but ready to train hard.

If you eat chicken and shop at Aldi, Lidl, Asda, or Iceland, please consider switching supermarkets.
These chains do not meet high animal welfare standards for chicken. Choosing differently can help reduce animal suffering.

Which UK supermarkets meet higher animal welfare standards for chicken?
Here’s a quick guide to help you shop more ethically:

✅ Fully Meets the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC):
• Marks & Spencer – All fresh chicken meets or exceeds BCC.
• Waitrose – All fresh chicken meets BCC; known for strong welfare practices.
• Co-op – All own-brand fresh chicken meets BCC.

🟡 Partially Meets the BCC:
• Sainsbury’s – Offers a BCC-compliant range, but not all chicken meets the standard.
• Tesco – “Room to Roam” is BCC-compliant, but most standard chicken is not.

❌ Fails the BCC:
• Aldi – Uses fast-growing breeds in intensive systems.
• Lidl – No BCC commitment; most chicken raised in low-welfare conditions.
• Asda – No higher welfare options in their standard range.
• Iceland – No commitment to BCC or high welfare.

After training and a protein-rich breakfast, I always reach for matcha.

It’s packed with a powerful antioxidant called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which helps reduce oxidative stress and inflammation — especially helpful after a tough workout.

And with the heatwave this week, it’s good to know that matcha’s polyphenols also offer some protection against UV damage.

I get mine from Amazon — it’s super delicious. Just add half a teaspoon to a jar, top with cold water, and give it a good shake. Drink as is, or pour into a glass or mug.

50, Fit, and Thriving - Even with a Hernia Diagnosis

A year and a half ago, I was diagnosed with an inguinal hernia that forced me to pause heavy lifting and completely change my training style. Surgery is scheduled for July - but I haven’t stopped. I simply adapted.

💪 I shifted to calisthenics (your body is a gym in itself)
🚴‍♀️ I swapped high-impact cardio for cycling and brisk walks
🧠 I stayed consistent, followed the science, and listened to my body

This weekend’s check-in shows my muscle mass increased by a pound in two days. A small but significant shift - and proof that sustainable results don’t come from crash diets or gimmicks. They come from structure, consistency, and smart strategy.

Here’s a quick breakdown of my body composition:

➡️ Weight: 114.6 lbs (stable, healthy)
➡️ BMI: 19.6 - lean but not underweight. Athletic.
➡️ Body Fat: 17.1% - within the athletic range for women (14 - 21%)
➡️ Visceral Fat: 2 - very low, which supports cardiovascular and metabolic health
➡️ Muscle Mass: 89.4 lbs - hard-earned, especially as a nearly 50-year-old woman
➡️ Skeletal Muscle: 48.4% - a high lean mass that keeps you strong and injury-resistant
➡️ Body Water: 57.0% - optimal hydration
➡️ Subcutaneous Fat: 16.1% - low, but well-balanced for hormonal health and skin support

My goal has always been more than aesthetics - I’m aiming for strength, vitality, and longevity. I don’t follow restrictive diets, and I definitely enjoy dessert. I also don’t spend endless hours each day or week doing cardio and resistance training. I want the same balance for my clients - to enjoy food and find a sustainable fitness routine that works for their lifestyle.

I’m sharing this not to boast, but to inspire - especially those who think:

👉 “I’ve lost my metabolism”
