A Michelin-star restaurateur accused of spiking a woman’s drink with a date-rape drug at a private members’ club told a jury that putting a substance in her drink was “wrong”. A trial at Southwark Crown Court was told that Vikas Nath, 63, used a straw to put gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) into the woman’s spicy margarita at the rooftop garden bar of Annabel's in Mayfair on January 15, 2024. Mr Nath, of Knightsbridge, west London, admits spiking the drink, but says it was to “relax” the woman rather than as part of a plan to have s*x with her, prosecutors say.

On Friday night, a 20-year-old man was arrested in The Faraday in Epsom after eagle eyed staff suspected him of attempting to spike a drink.

They reacted quickly and took the glass away, using a drink spiking test kit to indicate drugs were present in the drink. They alerted nearby officers who swiftly detained the individual involved.

Inspector Jon Vale said: “This was quick thinking on behalf of the staff at The Faraday and working with them, we were able to prevent anyone coming to harm. As part of funding we received through the Safer Streets project, which aims to improve night-time safety in Epsom, we have provided all venues in Epsom with drink spiking test kits to ensure they can act immediately if they have concerns. Drink spiking will not be tolerated, if you suspect yours or your friend’s drink might have been spiked, please get in touch with us straight away.”
