Autism policy and services: Employment 30/01/2026

UK data shows that the employment rate for autistic adults is lower than for non-autistic adults, with only about one in three autistic people in work in 2024/25.

Work can offer routines, purpose and financial independence. That’s why increasing employment inclusion – from recruitment to retention, is so important.

Autism diagnosis in adulthood is validating, but finding support can be a whole new struggle | Healthwatch Hertfordshire 29/01/2026

A recent report found that many autistic adults feel validated by a diagnosis, but then find it hard to work out what support is available next.

If you’re supporting someone newly diagnosed as an adult, talking through possible next steps and support options can make the process feel clearer and more manageable.

Autism diagnosis in adulthood is validating, but finding support can be a whole new struggle | Healthwatch Hertfordshire In our Support for Autistic Adults Report, people told us that after diagnosis they often felt like they were left on their own to process a life-changing diagnosis and struggled to navigate services or find support.

Adult autism support is not only about face-to-face time.

It can also involve planning, coordination, reviews, and communication between different people and services.

All of this contributes to how support is provided.

Autism does not end at 18.

Autistic adults still need understanding, appropriate support, and services that work for them.

Quick question for today.

What does good support actually look like for an autistic adult?

Curious to hear different perspectives.

21/01/2026

You’ll often hear the phrase “person-centred support”.

In real terms, it means support that fits the person, not the other way around:

- How someone communicates.
- What matters to them.
- What support actually helps.

That difference really matters.

16/01/2026

When it comes to supporting autistic adults, what matters more to you – consistency or flexibility?

There’s no single right answer, and it can look different for everyone.

Curious to hear different perspectives.

15/01/2026

Autistic adults don’t usually struggle because they lack motivation.

They struggle because systems are confusing, inconsistent, or inaccessible.

When services are clear and predictable, people can focus on living, not coping.

14/01/2026

There’s a common myth that once someone becomes an adult, they need less support.

For many autistic adults, the opposite can be true. Adult life brings new systems, expectations, and pressures.

Support needs don’t disappear, they change.
