BUILDING MODE vs MAINTENANCE MODE: HOW TO TAN PROPERLY

Let’s talk about BUILDING MODE and MAINTENANCE MODE when it comes to tanning…

🌤 BUILDING MODE

When you’re in BUILDING MODE, your tan normally develops over 3–5 sessions. The quality and condition of your tan depend on:

☀️ AVOIDING BURN

Trying to “catch up” with longer sessions will only slow you down.

We see it all the time - missing sessions, then trying to do extra to make up for it before a weekend plan. This usually leads to:
• Burning
• Being unable to tan again for 24–48 hours
• Faster skin shedding (peeling)

Burning does not equal tanning.

We also hear this a lot:

“I go red first, but then I go brown!”

❌ This is not a good sign.
Redness = skin damage, not progress.
Repeated burning accelerates skin ageing and long-term damage.

So here’s how to do it properly:

✅ BUILDING MODE PLAN

For fair to light brown skin types:
1. Start with 10–12 minutes for your first session.
2. Wait 24–48 hours between sessions (most fair skin types should stick closer to 24–36 hours).
3. Tan 2 more times that week.
• Keep time consistent
• Increase by no more than 2 minutes per session
• It’s okay to keep sessions the same while you’re learning how your skin reacts
4. Invest in an accelerator.
Indoor tanning lotions are designed to:
• Support colour development
• Help moisturise the skin
• Reduce excessive dryness and peeling
• Improve overall results

🌙 MAINTENANCE MODE

Once you’ve reached your desired shade:

✅ Maintain your colour with 1-2 sessions per week

So let’s explain exactly what’s going on - and why we do it.

When a sunbed has been freshly retubed, it can produce significantly higher UV output than usual. UV is what actually causes tanning - not the heat and not just the length of time you’re on the bed.

This means a newly retubed bed can deliver faster, stronger results in a shorter amount of time.

We understand that capped sessions can feel frustrating. Some people just want to lie back and relax for longer. But tanning isn’t about how long you’re on the bed — it’s about the results.

That said, we work by a few key principles:

Protecting your skin.
Burning is dangerous. It damages your skin and can cause long-term harm. Capping beds reduces the risk of burning, especially when lamps are new and more powerful.

Protecting our equipment.
During a retube period, higher UV output also means increased operating stress on the bed. This can lead to maintenance issues and unnecessary engineer callouts - which then results in downtime and longer waiting times for you.

So while we know shorter sessions can be annoying, they’re there to protect you and ensure our beds stay in perfect condition.
