Australia considers allowing some over-the-counter CBD products
ustralian health authorities are considering a new scheduling status for CBD, potentially making it available over the counter in low doses as early as this year.
The change could open a large new market in a nation with a thriving gray market for CBD but no legal access without a doctor’s prescription.
In a public submission to a Senate committee studying Australia’s medical cannabis access, the Department of Health said its Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is currently undertaking a safety review of CBD at lower doses.
“Based on the outcome of these studies, it is possible that relaxation of the scheduling status of low-dose CBD – e.g., to over the counter – could be considered during 2020,” the submission notes.

CBD for dogs: Could cannabis oil treat your pet's pain or anxiety? The latest doggy wellness trend explained by vets.
From drug stores to coffee shops, CBD seems to be everywhere. Hailed as the miracle substance to help treat everything from anxiety to poor sleep, CBD has become big business in the US, with nearly 7 per cent of Americans using it.
It's even expected that the CBD industry could be worth a staggering $16 billion by 2025.
CBD – or cannabidiol as it’s more formally known – is a type of cannabis oil derived from the cannabis plant. Unlike its close cousin ma*****na, which is commonly used recreationally, CBD is generally lacking in THC, the chemical substance responsible for getting you high.
In a landmark report published in 2018, the World Health Organisation (WHO) resolved that CBD had been “demonstrated as an effective treatment for epilepsy” in adults, children and even animals.

CBD oil benefits, fact or fiction? – Clinical trials reveal the truth
Whilst CBD was first isolated (and discovered) in 1940, it’s been the psychoactive constituent THC which has garnered all of the attention that is until 2010.
In 2010, the story of a little girl from Colorado and her struggle with a debilitating form of epilepsy started to make waves. She would so learn all about the CBD oil benefits. After trying every possible medical solution to provide some relief to their daughter, Charlotte Figi’s parents tentatively turned to the little known CBD oil for some solace for their daughter.
Within hours Charoltte’s epileptic seizures had stopped, her parents knew that their prayers had been answered. And in the years since little Charlotte Figi’s well publicized recovery, doctors and labs around the world, have taken up the mantel and have been investigating the benefits of Cannabidiol oil.
Attention around CBD oil has sky-rocketed in recent years, with the European market set to expand over 400% by 2023. Taking up where coconut oil left off, CBD is being hailed as the next cure-all supplement for every ailment under the sun.

CBD and Chronic Pain – How Can It Help?
For those suffering from chronic pain, it can be a life-changing experience. Simple everyday tasks become extremely difficult. Planning your day, socialising with friends and family and attending events can seem like an impossible challenge. If you’re a long term sufferer of chronic pain, then it can leave you feeling isolated and alone.
In a study carried out by the British Pain Society they discovered that two-fifths of the UK population suffer from chronic pain that has lasted three years or longer. Looking at chronic pain that is either moderately or severely disabling, the figure is still an astonishing 14.3%.
Many sufferers of chronic pain do so in silence, learning to cope with the pain, and adapting their lifestyles to accommodate it, sometimes without even realising that they’re doing so. The vast majority of sufferers will try and manage the pain with painkillers such as Paracetamol or Ibuprofen with varying degrees of success.
The good news for all chronic pain sufferers is that CBD is slowly gaining acceptance as an alternative to traditional pain killers. Research is underway analysing the effects of CBD on a wide variety of ailments. While it’s still early days, the initial results look promising.
We look at some of the most common causes of chronic pain and what research has been done concerning using CBD as a potential treatment…….

Slow Progress for Medical Cannabis in the UK
A year after cannabis rescheduling UK patients are still struggling with access
November 1, 2018, was a day for celebration amongst medical cannabis activists in the UK. With one stroke, the British government finally cast aside years of outdated dogma, moving ‘Cannabis Based Medicinal Products’ (CBMPs) from Schedule 1 to Schedule 2. Surely this would herald the access patients around the country had been campaigning for.
Unfortunately, a year has passed and only a handful of patients have actually been prescribed cannabis. And with the recent publication of the overly cautious National Health and Care and Excellence (NICE) guidelines for medical cannabis prescriptions, this looks unlikely to change for a while.
