My advice to Women over 40 is always to focus more on weight/ resistance training than HIIT style classes, to keep cortisol levels lower and to support bone density and muscles which decline in mass. This new study takes this advice further including slashing the risk of death.

Menopause brings a range of physical changes in the body, mainly driven by falling oestrogen levels. These shifts can vary in intensity and timing between individuals, but here are some solutions to common shifts.

Exercising during menopause is one of the most effective lifestyle strategies for managing symptoms and protecting long-term health. The key is choosing a mix of activities that support hormones, bones, mood, and metabolism.

A food-first approach is always recommended when it comes to supplements, but here are a few you can consider. For those on HRT it's best to check before taking, as some can interfere with effectiveness.

Oxidative stress is like normal wear-and-tear on the body.
Menopause doesn’t create it, but it can make the body less protected against it—so everyday stressors feel more noticeable, and symptoms can become more intense.
There are things you can do to support oxidative stress, but it's important to understand you can't “switch it off,” but you can help your body keep things balanced, which is the real goal.

Antioxidants can be particularly helpful during menopause because they support the body against oxidative stress, which tends to increase as oestrogen levels decline. Oestrogen itself has antioxidant-like protective effects, so when it drops, the body can become more vulnerable to cell damage linked to ageing, inflammation, and chronic disease.

Food should always be the foundation.
While supplements can sometimes be helpful, they don’t replace the complexity, balance, and benefits of real food. Many are highly processed, chemically manufactured, and not regulated in the same way as medicines in the UK—meaning quality can vary.
Whole foods give your body what it recognises, in the form it understands best.
Eat well first, supplement only when needed.

You don’t need a complicated diet for menopause—what matters is consistently eating the right nutrients in everyday meals. Think of it as building plates that naturally support hormones, bones, mood, and metabolism.
