🚨 AVAILABILITY 🚨

Due to a rather late cancellation I am now available this coming Monday 8th June.

There are unseen effects of late cancellations on small businesses.
- Time Restraints, your chances of filling an empty slot at short notice drop drastically.
- Lost Revenue, small businesses can not easily absorb the financial hit of an empty slot. Unfilled slots directly translate to lost wages.
- Turned Away Customers, canceling late means potential customers wanting that same slot may have already been turned away.
- Wasted Preparations, service based businesses often invest time in preparation before a job.

I know many will suggest a cancellation policy, but that comes with an added administrative burden and requiring deposits or strict commitments can deter potential clients in an already competitive market.

Unfortunately not the first time I’ve seen this.

We've recently encountered two pronged plugs in use in properties in Sheffield.

Those travel adaptors and two‑pronged plugs might seem quick and convenient… but they can be seriously dangerous if used incorrectly.

šŸ”Œ Here’s why:

- UK plugs are designed with a built‑in fuse to stop wires overheating
- Many two‑pin plugs and cheap adaptors don’t have this protection
- This can lead to overheating, electric shock or even fire
- Poor‑quality adaptors may also lack safety features like shutters or proper earthing

🚫 Never force a plug to fit or use unsafe adaptors in extension leads

āœ… Always use properly fused, UK‑approved plugs or conversion plugs

Most electrical fires start silently - don’t let a simple plug put your home at risk.

Caught this one just in the nick of time.

Having their PAT testing carried out saved this business from going up in smokeā—ļø

Remember don’t overload your extension leads. Just because it has multiple sockets doesn’t mean its safe to use them all at the same time.

A few recent discoveries

1) A poorly wired plug, re terminated correctly using crimp ferrules.
2) The card board wiring diagram still in place on this heater, remember to remove these before using your appliances.
3) Cable damage on a vacuum cleaner, removed from service by the duty holder as it was only a spare.
4) A counterfeit steriliser, scroll down the page for a post on this product.

If you like to discuss the PAT testing at your business no matter how small get in touch.

Have an e-bike or e-scooter?
Always follow this safety advise when charging.

An investigation into a house fire in Normanton earlier today (Thursday 28 May) has determined the most likely cause to be accidental due to the failure of a lithium-ion battery within an e-scooter.

Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire firefighters were mobilised at 09:03 hours to a three-storey terraced property on Baseball Drive, following a 999 call to control operators.

Crews attended from Ascot Drive, Kingsway, Nottingham Road, Long Eaton, Alfreton, Ilkeston, Ashbourne, Belper and Stapleford stations.

All three floors of the property were on fire, causing significant damage to the building. The fire also spread to the loft space of neighbouring properties.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus evacuated residents from the affected properties, and everyone was accounted for.

At its peak, seven fire engines, an aerial ladder platform (ALP), a water carrier, a command support unit, and a welfare unit were at the scene.

Crews used a combination of hose reel and main line jets to extinguish the fire and damp down the area. The gas and electrics were also isolated to all properties involved.

Derbyshire Constabulary temporarily closed nearby Vulcan Street and set up a cordon on Baseball Drive to allow emergency services to deal with the incident.

One person was taken to hospital by East Midlands Ambulance Service with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Several people were treated for minor injuries and smoke inhalation.

Firefighters left the scene at 14:58 hours and handed over to the responsible housing provider.
Derbyshire fire crews will return this evening to re-inspect the property.

The following fire safety advice is issued by Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service:
• Only charge e-bikes and e-scooters when you are awake and alert so you can respond quickly if there is a fire. Do not charge them when you are asleep or away from home.
• Avoid storing or charging e-bikes and e-scooters on escape routes or in communal areas, as this can block a safe exit in the event of a fire.
• Regularly inspect your product for damage or warning signs that the battery may be failing, as this can increase the risk of a fire developing quickly.
• In the event of an e-bike, e-scooter or lithium-ion battery fire, do not attempt to extinguish it. Get out, stay out and call 999.
• Make sure you have working smoke alarms fitted on every level of your home.

Ive heard all the common misconceptions ā€œPAT testing is a waste of timeā€ ā€œPAT testing is just a box ticking exerciseā€ ā€œYou only plug it into a machine and press a buttonā€ Etc

There is so many unsafe electrical products flooding the uk market via online marketplaces. Such as this steriliser discovered at a dog groomers I visited this week, purchased from an online marketplace that I’m sure most of you reading this will have an account with. Good PAT testers liaise with their counterparts and trading standards so have the knowledge to spot unsafe counterfeit products. Without PAT testing these dangerous products would remain undetected, posing risks such as electric shock and fire.

This particular item contained a counterfeit fuse and the plug did not meet the size dimensions of the British standard BS1363.

This is why a proper visual inspection is just as important as the electrical tests.

Did the previous tester miss it ? Or has the fuse been changed between their visit and mine ?

We’ll never know, but I carry a range of fuses so swapped it for a correctly rated 10a fuse as part of my free fuse replacements promise.
