Why It Is Important to Offer a Niche Treatment in Your Area
I was deleting some photos from my iphone and came across some of me about a year after I started doing beauty treatments again, after I'd had my children.
The photos showed me training in electrolysis with Liz Lee in Warminster, Wiltshire, who is a fabulous trainer. I then went on to train in blemish removal with Helen McGuiness in Southampton - also fabulous.
Over the years, those particular courses have helped me to create my successful aesthetics practice. People often come from miles around for treatments and I realised, as I was looking at the photos, just how important it is to have a niche treatment.
For many aesthetic practitioners starting out, it’s tempting to focus on treatments like Botox and dermal fillers. These are, after all, some of the most sought-after procedures in aesthetics. However, as more practitioners enter the field, many towns and cities have become saturated with businesses offering the same core treatments. While Botox and fillers are undoubtedly valuable services, they typically require clients to return only every three to six months, which can make it challenging to build a consistently busy practice.
This is where introducing at least one specialised treatment can truly set you apart.
Why a Specialised Treatment Makes a Difference
Specialised treatments address specific needs that are often overlooked or underrepresented in saturated markets. They appeal to clients seeking a specific service, and they provide a point of differentiation for your practice. By offering a treatment that is less common in your area, you establish yourself as an expert for that service.
For example, I began offering electrolysis nine years ago when I was first starting out. At that time, it wasn’t as widely available as it had been, and many people in my area were struggling to find a qualified electrologist. This decision proved to be invaluable.
Here’s why:
Regular Client Visits Unlike Botox or filler treatments, which typically require appointments only a few times a year, specialised treatments like electrolysis often involve regular, repeat visits. For instance, clients undergoing electrolysis may return weekly or monthly, depending on their treatment plan. This not only helps to build a steady flow of income but also fosters a stronger client-practitioner relationship.
Trust and Additional Treatment Opportunities Once clients come through your door for a specialised service, you have the opportunity to earn their trust. A strong relationship with your clients makes them more likely to explore other treatments you offer. For example, someone coming in for electrolysis may later become interested in skin rejuvenation treatments, chemical peels, or other services you provide. Specialised treatments act as an entry point, bringing clients into your practice and introducing them to your broader expertise.
Lower Competition Offering a specialised service allows you to stand out in a crowded marketplace. While many practitioners may focus on Botox and fillers, fewer specialise in treatments like electrolysis, microneedling, or advanced skin therapies. Clients who are actively searching for these services will naturally gravitate towards your practice if you are one of the few in your area offering them.
My Experience with Electrolysis
When I look back to when I first started, I can see just how much offering electrolysis has benefited my career. I still have clients who began with me nearly a decade ago, initially seeking electrolysis but now receiving a variety of other treatments. Electrolysis not only provided a steady and reliable income, but it also allowed me to create lasting relationships with my clients. Over the years, they have become some of my most loyal advocates, often referring friends and family to my practice.
Specialised treatments often don’t require a significant investment to get started. Electrolysis, for example, involves a relatively low cost for training and equipment compared to many other aesthetic procedures. Treatment costs are also low as it only requires a small, disposable electrolysis needle.
Yet, the long-term returns—in both financial and professional terms—can be substantial.
How to Choose Your Specialised Treatment
When selecting a treatment to offer, consider the following factors:
Demand in Your Area: Are there treatments that people are actively seeking but struggling to find locally?
Your Interests and Skills: Choose a treatment you’re genuinely interested in and willing to invest time in mastering.
Cost and Accessibility: Consider the training and equipment costs required to offer the service and how soon you’ll be able to integrate it into your practice.
Final Thoughts
Having a specialised treatment as part of your offering is more than just a way to stand out; it is a strategic move that can help you build trust, ensure steady client retention, and provide a solid foundation for your business. My experience with electrolysis has shown me how valuable it is to offer a service that meets a specific need while creating opportunities for growth. If you’re just starting out or looking to differentiate your practice, identifying and investing in a specialised treatment could be the step you need.
Remember, sometimes it’s the services that require a little extra effort—and a particular skill set—that pay off the most in the long run.
I’m always saying it! Niche treatments are SO important to how successful your business is.

Concentrate on treatments with low operational costs but high client satisfaction, such as chemical peels or LED therapy.
Postpone large investments until your income stream stabilises.

Include short facial massages, soothing masks, or LED therapy as complementary extras.
These thoughtful touches maintain your pricing structure and enhance client satisfaction.
3. Introduce Specialised Treatments
Stand out by offering unique services tailored to your clientele, such as:
Advanced radiofrequency facials
Innovative plasma pen procedures
