From our Florentine archives, a spiral thermometer crafted by the master glassblowers of the Medici court and inspired by the 17th-century instruments designed by Accademia del Cimento. More than a scientific device, it traces the extremes of nature, a delicate expression of artistry, curiosity, and Florentine ingenuity.

Since 1859, Santa Maria Novella’s soaps have combined tradition and innovation. Crafted according to time-honored recipes, they use natural ingredients such as natural oils, milk, and botanical extracts to cleanse, nourish, and protect the skin. For over 150 years, these timeless formulations have offered gentle care while leaving a subtle, enduring fragrance.

Frescoes painted in 1848 by Paolino Sarti adorn the historic central hall of the apothecary, depicting the four continents as they were conventionally represented at the time. They celebrate both the Florentine legacy and the far-reaching origins of the ingredients used in its officinal preparations.

Since 1221, Florence has been home to Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella. Born as the convent pharmacy of Dominican friars, it is regarded as the world’s oldest, continuously active in its historic premises. The neogothic counter shown here, carved in walnut in 1848, is part of the restoration that shaped the historic central hall, a project still preserved in the archives of Santa Maria Novella church.
