know we all KNOW this, but it’s an easy one to forget so here’s your reminder:
There’s a big difference between losing WEIGHT and losing FAT.
Weight loss refers to reducing your overall bodyweight. This includes everything from muscle mass, bones, organs, water weight, bowel content.....as well as fat.
But for the majority of the clients I work with, the goal isn’t just to weigh less, it’s to look leaner, more toned or more athletic.
In order to get those results (and maintain them) it’s important to focus on preserving as much muscle mass as we can. For my over 40 friends, structured strength training (regardless of whether or not you like it) is imperative.
Tracking your calories is great, but if you’re not taking in adequate protein (around .1g per 1kg of body weight *consistently*), you’ll likely lose more muscle than you’d like.
Weighing yourself is great, but the scale isn’t the only way to go about measuring progress when fat loss is the goal. If you’re getting super emotional, skip it altogether, or use it in combination with progress pictures, measurements and clothing. Your scale weight WILL fluctuate day to day based off of SO many factors. Zoom out from the day to day weights and focus on the bigger picture. And another important reminder - losing a HALF OF A KILO to a KILO (maybe a bit more) on average per WEEK is normal. Adjust your expectations!
Cardio is fine, but doing too much (especially without eating enough food or strength training) can eat away at your precious muscle tissue, and you may get SMALLER, but not look any different 😩
I was the guy who would say, “I’m just going to lose the weight first, THEN I’ll focus on toning up”. I’d eat the ridiculous 1200 calories Coach suggested, do an hour of cardio a day and was FURIOUS when I didn’t look any different. It’s not sustainable and it WILL backfire.
Don’t make the same mistakes I made.
Prioritize strength training, get your protein in and give that scale a bit of competition with pics and measurements 🙌🏻 Save and share if you needed this reminder :)
