Amber Fernandes came to Ramaiah Memorial Hospital with her husband Joe for treatment of Multiple Sclerosis in July 2024. Under the able clinical guidance of Dr. Santhosh Kumar Devdas, HOD & Consultant - Dept. of Medical Oncology and Chief- Adult Bone Marrow Transplantation, Amber was given Bone Marrow Transplantation to treat Multiple Sclerosis, an auto immune disease that damages the protective covering of nerves disrupting communication between the brain and the body. Read her updated account of blood work and latest health update.

I'm excited by the results of my latest blood work! Let me explain this image, which shows the effect of chemo and the result of stem cell transplant.

Immunoglobulins, also known as antibodies, are produced by white blood cells to protect your body. This graph shows 6 years of low immunoglobulins because of immunosuppressive treatment for MS. Even when I stopped immunosuppressive treatment 2 years ago, my values did not improve.

See the dot on the far right for both graphs? That's the blood test result from yesterday. And the dot right before it? That's from October, the first test I had done after getting the stem cell transplant in August.

You can see that in October, my G immunoglobulins (IgG) dropped even lower than they had been. That is because of the chemo I received. But yesterday, my G immunoglobulins rose almost to my pre-transplant values, which shows I'm recovering from chemo.
Even better, my A immunoglobulins (IgA) were within the normal range for the first time in at least 6 years and most likely 12!
(Not pictured are my M immunoglobulins, which look exactly the same as my As.)

Again, I went off immunosuppressants 2 years ago, and my immunoglobulins didn't improve. So this is proof that I have a new immune system that doesn't remember the 12 years of immunosuppressants! And it's likely my new immune system doesn't have MS either.

I expect my IgG to continue to go up and soon match my IgA and IgM.
