I remember the date that never happened 🥀

It took me an hour to type "okay, sure" for that first coffee date, not because I didn’t want to go, but because my fingers froze every time I thought about what it would mean if I said yes. I wasted two hours pulling clothes out of my cupboard, trying them on, changing my mind, and standing in front of the mirror asking myself if I looked "good enough," as if the mirror had the answers.

I rehearsed how to say "hi, how are you" three times, probably more, just three simple words, but I kept practicing them like they were lines in a play; my heart beat fast even at the thought of your face on the other side.

I traveled four kilometers, not a long journey by any means, but every traffic signal, every honk, every pause stretched time and made me wonder if you’d already reached before me.

Our table was number five, the corner one, the kind of table where you can pretend to be mysterious if someone’s watching you, the kind where you hope you don’t look lonely. I sat down and told myself, This is it, this is the start of something.

6 PM was the time we decided; the café smelled of burnt espresso and cinnamon, and I remember thinking, This is exactly how I wanted it to feel. By 6:10, I was looking at the door every time it opened; at 6:20, I started tracing patterns on the cup in front of me; by 6:30, I told myself you were just stuck in traffic.

7 PM, that’s when I read the menu again, though I already knew every item by heart; it wasn’t about choosing what to eat, it was about pretending to be busy so nobody noticed I was waiting.

I called you eight times, each time my chest tightening a little more, my voice rehearsing a casual "hey, where are you?" but never getting the chance to say it.

By 9, I wasn’t just waiting anymore; I was overthinking, playing out stories in my head; maybe you lost your phone, maybe something came up, maybe you were standing outside, deciding not to walk in; every possibility hurt in its own way.

And by 10… well, that’s the number of pieces my heart broke into, maybe more, because it wasn’t just that you didn’t show up, it was the silence, the emptiness across the table, the way time felt heavy, pressing down on me.

You never walked in, but in my head, you did; you smiled, you waved, you sat down, and for a while the world felt right; and maybe that’s the cruelest part of it all.
