Introduction: A Conversation We Need to Have
Church. A word that, for many, evokes memories of community, worship, and spiritual growth. But for others, it carries weight, guilt, and confusion.
In this blog, I want to talk about a painful truth: sometimes churches aren’t places of healing but sources of emotional and financial strain.
This isn’t about attacking faith or people who genuinely serve. This is about acknowledging the real stories of people who've been hurt in spaces that were supposed to help.
🙏 The Church as It Should Be
Ideally, church is:
• A spiritual hospital for the hurting.
• A refuge for the weary.
• A space of community and compassion.
• A connection point to the Divine.
But for many, that vision feels far from reality.
Instead of rest they find pressure;
• Instead of acceptance they find judgment.
• Instead of healing, they find exhaustion.
So... what happened?
đź’” The Emotional Weight of Church Culture
Let’s be real-some churches put immense emotional pressure on their members.Common emotional burdens include:
• Shame-based messaging
• Spiritual gaslighting (e.g., “Your anxiety is just a lack of faith”)
• Overwork in the name of “serving”
• Fear-based loyalty (“Don’t question the pastor—it’s rebellion”)
"I served, gave, prayed, and performed—but I never felt like I could rest. I was spiritually tired all the time." Anonymous
These are not just isolated experiences. Many people stay silent because speaking up risks shame, exile, or being labeled as “backslidden.”
đź’¸ The Financial Drain No One Talks About
Churches often teach about tithing and giving and that’s fine. Giving can be a beautiful, worshipful act. But when giving becomes coerced, it becomes dangerous.
Red flags of financial manipulation:
• Weekly “seed faith” demands
• Never-ending building fund campaigns
• Prosperity sermons with strings attached: “Give more to be blessed more”
• Leadership with lavish lifestyles while members struggle
When giving becomes a transaction, not a choice, it stops being spiritual and starts becoming exploitative.
“Jesus flipped tables for less.” (Matthew 21:12-13)
🤔 Why People Stay in Harmful Churches
Leaving a toxic church isn’t easy. Because church isn’t just a place, it’s: Family, Culture, Identity and a safety nest. So walking away can mean losing your community, your friends, even your job if you're on staff.
And spiritually, people are taught: “If you leave this place, you leave God.”
But here’s the truth:
Walking away from a toxic church is not walking away from God. In fact, sometimes it’s the most faithful thing you can do.
🌱 What Healing Can Look Like
• If you've been emotionally or financially drained by your church experience, you're not alone. And you’re not wrong for feeling the way you feel.
Healing might look like:
• Finding a healthier, safer church
• Worshipping privately or in smaller communities.
• Relearning who God is outside of institutional religion
Whatever your journey looks like, it’s valid. You are not broken, You are not rebellious. You are not less spiritual for setting boundaries.
✨ Final Words: You’re Not Alone, Church hurt is real. Spiritual burnout is real. Financial exploitation under the banner of faith is real. But so is healing. So is peace. So is the love of God far beyond four walls and a pulpit.
“You are still loved. You are still seen. And you are not alone.”
