YOU CAN'T FIX HEALTHCARE WITHOUT FIXING HEALTH (PART 1/5)
What determines health and well-being? To improve health, most governments have traditionally focused on the healthcare system as the key driver of health and health outcomes.
Although healthcare (a.k.a ‘medical care’) is essential to health, it is a relatively weak health determinant, and studies have shown that non-health factors account for about 80 percent of what makes us ill. Healthcare accounts for only percent of what makes keeps us healthy.
Non-medical factors that impact the health of individuals include socio-economics 40% (education, employment, income), behaviours 30% (diet, exercise, alcohol, smoking, sexual activity) and environmental conditions10% (water, air quality, housing).
It follows that you can't fix healthcare without fixing health; you can't fix health without fixing the social conditions in which people live, grow and die.
In fact, most improvements in health outcomes and life expectancies in the 20th Century in Europe and USA resulted from improvements in living conditions such as nutrition, clean water, housing and sanitation, long before modern intervention such as antibiotics and intensive care units (see graph below).
