LETS FOCUS ON THE KIDNEY TODAY
π©Ί What is Dialysis?
Dialysis is a life-saving treatment for people with end-stage kidney failure (stage 5 CKD). When kidneys fail, they canβt:
Filter waste products from the blood.
Remove excess fluid.
Balance electrolytes (like potassium, sodium).
Dialysis does this work for the kidneys.
There are two main types:
1οΈβ£ Hemodialysis
Blood is pumped from your body to a dialysis machine (dialyzer).
The machine filters wastes & extra fluid, then returns clean blood.
Usually done 3 times a week, 4β5 hours per session in a hospital or dialysis center.
2οΈβ£ Peritoneal Dialysis (PD)
Uses your own abdomen lining (peritoneum) as a filter.
A cleansing fluid goes into your belly through a catheter.
Waste passes from blood into the fluid, which is then drained.
Can be done at home, daily.
π Dialysis in Kenya: Current situation
β
Demand is high and rising:
Over 5,000 Kenyans are on regular dialysis.
The number is growing fast due to increasing diabetes & hypertension.
β
Access is limited:
Dialysis centers are mostly in major towns (Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret).
Rural areas often lack dialysis units.
Many people travel long distances weekly.
β
Cost is a burden:
Each session costs about KES 9,500β12,000 in private facilities.
SHA covers up to 2 sessions a week, but some patients need more.
Extra costs: blood tests, medications, travel.
β
Capacity:
Some county hospitals now have dialysis machines due to government investment.
Still, machines are few, maintenance issues are common.
β
Kidney transplants:
For some, a kidney transplant is a better long-term solution.
Transplants are done mainly at Kenyatta National Hospital or private hospitals.
Cost & donor availability limit access.
π¨ What happens without dialysis?
If a patient with end-stage kidney disease does not get dialysis or transplant:
Toxins and fluid build up in the body.
Complications: severe swelling, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, coma.
Death can occur within days to weeks when kidneys fully stop.
πΏ Can dialysis be prevented?
Yes! If kidney disease is found early, lifestyle changes, medications & regular monitoring can slow or stop progression to end-stage failure β meaning dialysis may never be needed.
