Suwon Hwaseong Fortress (수원 화성) is a spectacular UNESCO World Heritage site that perfectly blends historical architecture with the surrounding natural landscape. It is a "must-visit" for your page because it offers a unique mix of military history and deep family loyalty.

The Story of Filial Piety & Innovation

​A King’s Love: Built between 1794 and 1796, King Jeongjo commissioned this massive fortress to honor and protect the tomb of his father, Crown Prince Sado. Because of this, it is often called a symbol of "Hyo" (filial piety).

​Scientific Design: The fortress was revolutionary for its time, using advanced "Silhak" (practical learning) principles. It combined Eastern and Western architectural techniques and utilized new inventions like the geojunggi (a type of crane) to move massive stones.

​Massive Scale: The fortress walls stretch for over 5.7 kilometers, encircling much of central Suwon. It features 41 remaining original facilities, including massive gates, observation towers, and artillery posts.

​Flying Suwon: Iconic helium balloon that rises 150 meters into the air, giving visitors a bird's-eye view of the entire fortress city.

​Janganmun Gate: This is the largest gate in all of Korea—even larger than the gates in Seoul.

​Palace Stays: Within the walls lies Hwaseong Haenggung, a temporary palace where the King stayed during his travels.
