Wimalasena Perera OLY 🇱🇰 Sri Lanka’s Marathon Hero Who Ran for the Olympic Dream
One of the most respected names in the history of Sri Lankan athletics is Wimalasena Perera OLY . Through dedication, perseverance, and unwavering determination, he earned his place among the country's finest long-distance runners and proudly carried Sri Lanka’s flag onto the world stage.
Representing Sri Lanka in the marathon event at the 1968 Olympic Games, he was widely regarded as the nation’s leading marathon runner of his era.
Born on 30 May 1945 in Colombo, Wimalasena Perera displayed exceptional talent in athletics from his school days. While studying at Sri Dharmaloka College, he established a Sri Lankan schools’ record in the 1,500 metres, demonstrating the potential that would later define his sporting career.
He subsequently joined the Sri Lanka Army, where he continued to develop and refine his abilities as a long-distance runner.
The year 1966 marked a turning point in his athletic journey. During that year, he broke the national marathon record previously held by Linus Dias and emerged as Sri Lanka’s premier marathon athlete. The significance of this achievement was highlighted by the fact that his record remained unbeaten for nearly twenty-five years, a remarkable testament to his excellence and endurance.
Following his national success, Perera advanced to the international arena. In 1966, he represented Sri Lanka at the Asian Games and later that same year competed at the Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica. His performances on these prestigious stages established him as one of the country’s most accomplished distance runners.
In 1967, he achieved further international recognition by winning silver medals in both the 5,000-metre and 10,000-metre events at the Singapore Open Athletics Championships. These accomplishments showcased the strength and potential of Sri Lankan distance running on the regional stage.
The pinnacle of his athletic career came in 1968 when he represented Sri Lanka at the Olympic Games in Mexico City. Competing in one of the most demanding marathon races ever held due to the city’s high altitude, Perera demonstrated extraordinary courage and determination.
Despite suffering from a foot injury during his preparations, he refused to abandon his Olympic dream and successfully completed the race, finishing 51st among a field of more than eighty athletes.
In 1969, he continued his impressive run of performances by securing fourth place at the Hong Kong International Marathon, adding another notable achievement to his distinguished career.
Beyond his accomplishments as an athlete, Wimalasena Perera also made significant contributions to the development of athletics in Sri Lanka. He served as Chairman of the National Athletics Selection Committee, helping to guide and nurture future generations of Sri Lankan athletes.
Today, the name Wimalasena Perera OLY occupies a special place in the history of Sri Lankan athletics. His legacy extends beyond records and achievements; it is a story of resilience, commitment, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
His life reminds us that true success is measured not only by medals won but also by the courage to overcome challenges and continue striving toward one’s dreams.
As a pioneer of Sri Lankan distance running and an Olympian who proudly represented his nation on the world stage, Wimalasena Perera OLY remains an enduring inspiration to future generations of athletes and sports enthusiasts alike.
