Blantyre-based youth-led organisation, Makhetha Youth Achievers (MYA), through its free Information Communication Technology (ICT) training programme, has equipped 26 young people in Machinjiri township with digital literacy skills.

The training aimed to improve young people's practical knowledge and skills in key ICT areas, including basic computer operations, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, online safety, and responsible technology use.

MYA Director of Programs Yunusu M***a told Malawi News Agency (Mana) on Wednesday that the training was conducted from May 14 to June 21 as a response to growing demand for digital skills among young people in their community.

“It emphasised hands-on learning, allowing participants to develop confidence in using computers and digital tools. Through practical exercises and guided instructions, trainees acquire skills that can support their education, employment prospects, business activities and everyday digital needs,” he said.

M***a stated that the program attracted a high number of applications from interested youths, but due to limited resources and training equipment, others were dropped.

“The strong interest shown by applicants highlights the need for continued investment in youth digital skills development. The successful completion of this training marks an important milestone in empowering young people with digital skills and preparing them to participate effectively in an increasingly technology-driven world,” he added.

M***a also assured MYA's commitment to expanding access to digital literacy, aiming to reach many young people in future cohorts.
One of the trainees, Carolyn Chikazingwa, commended MYA for the training, noting that she would use the skills she gained to earn a living.

“The training was very important. I have learned many things, including how to collect data, and I can use that to make money,” she said.

Another trainee, Austin Malukhu, said that the training was an eye-opener, as he had been equipped with essential digital skills, including cybersecurity.

Upon completion of the one-and-a-half-month training, participants, who included nine girls and 17 boys, received certificates of attendance.
