*What is HOCl?*
Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) is a mild acid naturally produced in the white blood cells of all mammals. It plays a vital role in our immune system by producing molecules like hypochlorous acid when the body reacts to infections. These molecules kill pathogens by oxidation and chlorination.

HOCl breaks down the cell walls of single-celled microorganisms (like bacteria and viruses) by denaturing their proteins with reactive oxygen species. Human tissues are not affected because they have protective mechanisms against HOCl.

*How Does HOCl Work?*
HOCl attacks the cell walls of microorganisms and increases their permeability. The pressure difference between the hypochlorous solution and the germ-contaminated surface creates a hypoosmotic environment. This causes an influx of water into the germs’ cells, leading to increased internal pressure that eventually bursts the pathogen’s cell walls.

*Redox and pH Value*

* *Redox voltage* refers to the voltage measured against a reference electrode when immersed in a solution. It indicates the disinfecting or oxidizing effect of a substance like HOCl.

* *pH value* measures how acidic or basic a solution is. The redox voltage depends on the concentration ratio of the oxidizing agent (HOCl) to the reducing agent (organic contaminants). Both redox and pH values must be documented together for accuracy.

*Comparison of HOCl and NaOCl*
While both HOCl and Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl, or bleach) are oxidizing agents, there’s a big difference in their charge:

* *NaOCl* is negatively charged, while *HOCl* is neutrally charged.
