Malaria in pregnancy is a serious condition where a pregnant woman becomes infected with Plasmodium parasites, the organisms that cause malaria. It is especially dangerous in areas where malaria is common (endemic regions) and can lead to serious health risks for both the mother and baby.

Malaria in pregnancy is caused by the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito carrying Plasmodium parasites, most commonly:
• Plasmodium falciparum (most dangerous and common in Africa)
• Plasmodium vivax (more common in Asia and Latin America)

Symptoms may be mild or severe depending on immunity and the species of Plasmodium. Common signs include:
• Fever and chills
• Headache
• Nausea and vomiting

2. Use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs):
• Sleeping under treated nets every night.
3. Indoor residual spraying (IRS):
• Spraying homes with insecticide to kill mosquitoes.
4. Avoiding mosquito exposure:
• Wearing protective clothing and using repellents.

Treatment depends on the trimester and type of malaria:
• First trimester: Quinine + clindamycin is usually recommended.
• Second and third trimesters: Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs), such as artemether-lumefantrine, are safe and effective.
• Treatment should always be guided by a healthcare provider to avoid harm to mother or baby.
