“MAMA G.O”
(From Mushin to Paris)
Rasheedat Ajibade’s story begins in the vibrant but very challenging streets of Mushin, Lagos, where she was born on December 8, 1999. She lost her father at a tender age and grew up in extreme poverty, in a crowded compound that housed over 100 people. Sharing a single room with seven family members, every day was a struggle for survival.
To support her family, she hawked and sold anything she could; charcoal, plantain, washing detergents, zobo, kunu, and more. Many evenings, she remai5ned on the streets well past 11 p.m. after school, still trying to earn enough to make ends meet.
Beyond hawking, Rasheedat also took on small jobs: washing toilets and bathrooms for neighbors in exchange for a little fee, and working as a domestic helper for families where she was often met with disrespect and dehumanizing treatment. Yet, these experiences only sharpened her determination.
