The next day, I went to school with all smiles only for me to see Ife and Femi locking arms. They also saw me and Ife thanked me for the gift. All Femi could do was mouth ‘sorry’ as she pulled him away.

THE LOVE THAT GOT AWAY
Once upon a time in secondary school, Valentine’s day was fast approaching and I was nervous to ask Ife, my long-time crush, to be my val.
Ife was that girl you will find in every school. Beautiful, smart, popular, and friendly. But I wanted to be more than her friend and classmate.

However, I didn’t know what to do, so I sought the counsel of my best friend, Femi.
Femi advised me to be different from other guys who were also trying to win her attention by getting Ife a surprise gift without asking her to be my val. That way, she would appreciate my thoughtfulness and gift even more.

He suggested I got her perfume and he even offered to help me get a nice one for Ife. I gave him all my savings at the time to get it done.
Fast forward to the day before Valentine’s, Femi came to school with a cute little box wrapped in pink. He gave it to me and told me to walk up to Ife and give it to her but I could not do it. I was too shy to walk up to her myself.
So, I asked Femi for one final favour, which was to get the gift to Ife in my name. As my best friend, he agreed to do it for me. He came back and told me she accepted the gift and sent her thanks. As naïve as I was, I considered that she had accepted my proposal to be my val.
