One secret every mentee should learn is that you don't follow a person because you admire what they have, you follow them because you love them.

You don't make someone your mentor because of what you stand to gain; you make them a mentor because you want to give to them.

There is nothing that destroys relationships like that attitude that seeks to collect, to take, to want things for yourself that you have seen in another

This was the error of the rich young ruler. He wanted the gift added to him. He didn't want the Giver. If he could have put Jesus in a blender or distiller and gotten Eternal Life from Him, he would have blended Jesus straightaway. He was not a lover, he was a user.

He ran to Jesus and knelt down like a faithful disciple, but he didn't want to follow; he wanted to get something.

Less than one week into "mentorship", you are asking your mentor for money. You meet a man of God and you ask him for his secret. "Papa, tell me your secret". You want a formula, a prescription, a potion. You don't have a God-given vision, just self-promoting ambition.

Some even give to get. They don't give to give. There is a difference between giving to give -giving because you love; and giving to get -giving so that you can get. There are those who think something is owed them because they gave a large gift or honorarium or seed.

The next thing is that they think anything they want from the mentor must come. They think he or she must answer whenever they call and honor every invitation. Is he not the one I gave 5 million to?

That is not seed. That is not giving. That is trying to buy favor. It is trying to buy access. It is trying to buy the anointing. And you cannot buy God's favor. The attempt alone is witchcraft. Simon tried it with Peter. And Simon was a sorcerer.

Real giving to your mentor is a privilege. It is an act of love. It is a token of what you owe, not what you are to be owed. Real giving is selfless and has its eye on God as the Rewarder - whether it is to a mentor or even to the poor- not man.

And that rich young fellow was not the only one. After Jesus fed the people with bread in John 6, they followed him en masse and wanted to make him King, just because of what they stood to gain.

By the time he introduced to them who He really was, the sheep were separated from the goats. The goats didn't want that. They didn't want Him. They wanted what He could give them. And there are many in the church today who are like that. Uncommitted consumers. Committed for the wrong reasons. Serving for the wrong reasons.

What was the CV of Elisha?

There were many other sons of the prophets.

In their CV, you will read things such as...

I touched the garment of Elijah
I have listened to all the messages of Elijah
I knelt down before Elijah and said "Man of God, I want to be like you"
I sowed seed into Elijah's life
I call him Papa Elijah, the man of God of our time
I was the first to invite Elijah to come minister in Samaria.
I heard Elijah fasted for 40 days so I too did 40 days dry
I jumped and ran to be the first to sit on the seat Elijah just got up from
I use Elijah Study Bible

There may be some blessings in all of those things;

But what was in the CV of Elisha?

He poured water on the hands of Elijah. Finish.

And the mantle fell on him.

Yes, it is more blessed to give than to receive.
