I Stayed With Him for 5 Years, But When He Took Me to His Home in Malawi, His Family Showed Me His Grave 🪦 😢 šŸ’”

Part 1 āœļø

Written By Thandow Nyathi

For five years, my life followed a rhythm I thought I understood. I woke up beside a man who laughed easily, worked hard, and carried a past he rarely spoke about. He never raised his voice, never stayed out late, never gave me reason to doubt him. If anything, he was too careful, like someone afraid of being noticed by the world.

We lived quietly, far from his roots. Whenever I asked about his family, his answers were short and neat, like doors gently closed before I could peek inside. ā€œThey are simple people,ā€ he would say. ā€œVillage life. Nothing special.ā€ I believed him because love often teaches us not to ask too many questions.

What unsettled me, even then, were the small things. He avoided photographs. He refused to attend gatherings where people from his country were present. When someone spoke his native language in public, his face tightened, and he would pull me closer, whispering that we should leave. At night, he sometimes woke up gasping, calling a name that was not mine.

Still, life moved forward. We built a home, raised children, and survived struggles together. To the outside world, we were a family like any other. Inside, I carried a quiet fear I could never name.

One evening, he surprised me by saying it was time for me to meet his people. He said his parents were old and asking questions, and that tradition demanded my presence. His voice shook when he said it, but I thought it was emotion. I was even happy. After years of silence, he was finally opening that locked door.

The journey was long and tiring. As we crossed borders and landscapes changed, I noticed him growing distant. He stared out the window as if counting invisible things, whispering prayers under his breath. When I asked if he was okay, he smiled too quickly and told me everything would make sense soon.

When we finally arrived at his village, the air felt heavy, like a storm waiting to break. The houses stood quietly, and people stopped talking when they saw us. Some stared openly. Others turned away as if they had seen a ghost.

He held my hand tightly and led me toward one of the houses. Just before we reached the door, he stopped. His grip loosened. He told me to go inside and greet the elders, that he needed a moment.

That was the last moment I saw his face as I knew it—pale, frightened, and strangely relieved.

I stepped inside, unaware that the truth waiting for me was far darker than anything my fears had imagined.

There will be days when you doubt yourself, when nothing seems to go right. But those days don’t define you. What defines you is your ability to keep going anyway.

"I was sleeping one day and I received a call from someone saying, ā€œPut on your TV, Obasanjo is talking about you.ā€ I was like, really? What did I do?

And I was hearing Obasanjo say that he loves songs like ā€œif you push me I will push youā€, he loves songs like ā€œhe go betterā€, but there is one st&p!d boy that sang ā€œNigeria Jagajaga," it’s his father and his mother that are Jagajaga.

I was so happy that my message got to the President.

Three months later, Obasanjo gathered his governors, and they were going to Europe to look for foreign investors.

My friend, a German ambassador, reached out to me and said, ā€œEedris, I want you to come and perform at one of the events where your President is coming.ā€ I said, ā€œGreat,ā€ and entered Europe too.

It was my time to perform. The MC announced that a talented musician, Eedris Abdulkareem, will be coming on stage. Before I got to the stage, the DJ had started playing my song ā€œJagajaga.ā€

At that moment, OBJ didn’t even know it was 'Jagajaga'. He had started shaking his body and dancing to it. Few minutes later, it dawned on him that the song being played was the same ā€œNigeria Jagajagaā€ song he had once rĀ£bukĀ£d.

He said, ā€œEeeeh,ā€ got upsĀ£t immediately and travelled back to Nigeria without finishing his foreign investors assignment..."

- Veteran singer Eedris Abdulkareem recounts how former president Olusegun Obasanjo reacted after hearing his controversial song ā€˜Jagajaga’ at an event in Europe.

Quitting only proves the doubters right, but perseverance silences them forever. Every time you choose to rise instead of give up, you rewrite your story with strength, courage, and resilience. I went to a very busy market to buy some food items.

While I was walking around, I noticed two shop owners having a serious argument.

There is a small gutter that runs right in front of their shops in a straight line.

The problem started when one of them began sweeping dirty water in the gutter toward the other person’s side .

The second man didn’t take it lightly, and that was how the argument began.

Before long, it became a serious issue.
Both of them ended up standing side by side in front of their shops, sweeping the gutter at the same time in anger, each trying to prove a point.

Customers who came to buy were just standing there watching everything.

Some were confused, some were laughing, and others were still waiting to be attended to 😭
People around were reacting:
*So nobody is selling again because of the gutter?
*Abeg, attend to customers first!ā€
Even passersby stopped to watch the drama.

And I just stood there thinking:
*So a small gutter can really cause this kind of problem in business
