Bulbophyllum is a conspicuous and ecologically important genus of epiphytic orchids in Cross River National Park, flourishing within the humid understory and lower canopy where high moisture and subdued light prevail. Renowned for its extraordinary morphological diversity and specialized floral adaptations, Bulbophyllum contributes significantly to rainforest structural complexity, supports intricate pollination networks, and serves as a sensitive bioindicator of intact, undisturbed tropical forest ecosystems.

Throwback to Ibadan, 2015 🌿
In 2015, I had the privilege of participating in a botanical research exercise in Ibadan alongside seasoned plant taxonomists, Dr. Odewo and Mr. Adeniji. The study focused on plant identification, field collection, and taxonomic documentation, strengthening practical skills in morphology and herbarium techniques.
That experience played a key role in shaping my journey in plant taxonomy and deepening my appreciation for collaborative scientific research in Nigeria. Truly a memorable chapter in my botanical career.

As a plant taxonomist, I undertake demanding field expeditions that often involve significant personal risk in order to collect plant specimens for scientific research and proper documentation. These journeys frequently bring me into close contact with hazardous wildlife, including venomous snakes in remote forested environments. Despite these challenges, I remain confident that it is God’s protection and guidance that preserve me throughout my work

ANCHOMANES DIFFORMIS: DISTRIBUTION, MEDICINAL USES, AND VEGETATION IMPORTANCE
Anchomanes difformis (Family: Araceae) is a perennial herb commonly found in the tropical regions of West and Central Africa. It typically grows in moist, shaded habitats, especially in forest undergrowth, riverbanks, fallow farmlands, and disturbed woodland areas. In Nigeria, it is widely distributed across the rainforest and southern Guinea savannah zones, including states such as Cross River, Edo, Ondo, Delta, and parts of the Middle Belt.
Medicinal Uses
Anchomanes difformis is well known in ethnomedicine. Traditionally:
Rhizomes and leaves are used for managing rheumatism, inflammatory conditions, and swellings.
Preparations from the plant are commonly applied for gastrointestinal issues, such as stomach pain and diarrhea.
In some communities, the plant is used for wound management due to its antimicrobial reputation.
Certain herbal practitioners also use it in remedies for snakebite and detoxification.
(Note: For safety, always emphasize proper identification and avoid internal use without expert guidance.)
Importance in Vegetation Ecology
Pioneer Species: Anchomanes difformis often colonizes disturbed sites, helping stabilize the soil and initiate early successional vegetation.
Soil Improvement: Its large rhizomes contribute to organic matter accumulation, enriching the soil as they decay.
Habitat Indicator: Its presence often indicates moist, humus-rich soils and can be used to assess forest health or past disturbance.
Understory Diversity: The broad leaves contribute to understory shading, influencing microclimate and supporting certain shade-loving species.
In the heart of Cross River National Park, I captured this stunning green viper resting gracefully among the rainforest vegetation. Its bright green scales blend perfectly with the lush canopy—an amazing example of camouflage and rainforest adaptation. Truly one of the park’s most beautiful but highly venomous reptiles.
