MY PLEDGE TO NDI ABIA
Uche Ogah on Transportation
"Reimagining transportation in Abia State is a cardinal feature of my integrated development bouquet for the state when in office as the chief servant of our people. It's my desire and I believe it's in tandem with the desire of Abians to fast track all round development in our state capital, Umuahia, then Aba and other parts of the state in order to change the outlook of our state from a rural disposition to a bustling metropolitan state. A world-class transportation system will quickly confer this status on our beloved Abia State.
We will introduce global best practices in our intra-city and inter-city transportation modes as well as develop other modes of moving our people and goods within the state. We will engage in construction of new roads and required infrastructure to ensure a viable connection of all parts of the state without having to go through a neighbouring state to continue access to other parts of our own state.
Around the world, deliberate policies are targeted at transport systems because the transport system contributes massively in boosting the status of towns and cities. We will be introducing modern bus terminals in Umuahia and Aba which would serve as a transportation hub to connect other towns of the state. My transportation blueprint entails the development of standard bus terminals in the capital towns of each LGA so we can bequeath a completely linked state to our people with regular bus departure and arrival times.
A critical component of my transportation plan is the massive introduction of purpose-built coach vehicles which we will introduce to the new inter-LGA routes and intra-city routes. The new transport system would be a partnership venture open to all who are interested in investing. The new transport approach would run on an arrival-departure system with scheduled stops at designated stations. The idea behind this system is to ensure that our people may live in a part of the state and conduct their business in other parts of the state thereby bolstering our local economy and opening up our towns to simultaneous development.
To fast track our modernization of the state and in contributing to the inclusion of our towns to the global community, payments for travel on this new transport system will be through a unique format wherein customers who would use this buses would purchase their cards, load it with their desired amounts and use it as mode of payment till they have need to top up the cards with funds. Another component of the new transport system coming to Abia State is the introduction of a Bus Pass to our pensioners and senior citizens who would be issued their cards at zero cost as government will fund the bus pass system for those in that category.
The determination to rapidly open up our state and bring about massive development across various metrics will see us commence a super ambitious light rail transit system across a number of lines that will run from Lokpa in Umunneochi LGA, through Umuahia, Aba and on to Akwete in Ukwa East LGA with spurs that will terminate at Abiriba and Ozuabam in Ohafia and Arochukwu LGAs of the state. With a light rail system in place, one can only imagine the rapid industrialization that will grip Abia State with the attendant influx of persons, goods and services to our state which would account for a burgeoning economy and a self-sustaining state.
My plan for the transport sector in Abia State serves to complement my all-round vision of urbanization of several LGAs and the metropolitanization of our capital city, Umuahia and Aba, the commercial nerve center of our beloved Abia State. Indeed, everyone in Abia State today is in a hurry to change the fortunes of the state and so are we. Upon ascendancy to the seat of Governor of Abia State, my goal is to commence from the first day in office to line up the structures and systems that are vital to our delivery of a beautiful and efficient Abia State that works for all."
